Celebrating Women’s Day with a fresco from #Pompeii. #WD2025

Portrait of a woman’s head in a circular frame. She has dark frizzy hair tied back. She wears large silver/pearl earrings made up of 4 spheres tightly bunched. Her right hand is gently lifting her silky garment off her shoulder.

Everyone’s favourite - the ‘Wolf and Twins’ mosaic from Roman Aldborough (Isurium Brigantum) depicting the legend of Romulus and Remus. Dating to the 4th century AD, the mosaic is now part of the collections at Leeds City Museum. 📸 My own. #MosaicMonday #RomanBritain

We're celebrating, as ever, the start of Super Bowl 2025 with this Superb Owl. 🦉

A mosaic of an owl, with part of the black and white corner of the mosaic border above him. The owl is a mess. He honestly looks like he hasn't slept for days.

Happy #NationalHedgehogDay! This little model of a hedgehog was made around 1500–1300 BCE in Egypt. Hedgehogs had a favourable reputation in ancient Egypt & were often seen as a symbol of rebirth & renewal of life, likely due to their reappearances after long periods of absence while hibernating.

Tiny blue figurine of a hedgehog, with black spikes, made in Egypt about 1,500–1,300 BCE.

Happy Mosaic Monday to those who celebrate 🤗 Here is a gorgeous (albeit fragmentary) mosaic from Sami, Kefalonia, Greece. Dates to around the 3 c. CE and is currently on display in front of the Archaeological Museum of Sami. #mosaicmonday

One of my favorite mosaics for my first #mosaicmonday on Bluesky. The Horae (or maybe the Three Graces) dancing around an altar from a villa in Patras, Greece. 2-3 c. CE.

Mosaic with blue and white tesserae with a geometric pattern, and two rows of shells at the top
