Oh, you should definitely read it! There’s a (magic-ish) boarding school where kids with different magical abilities or “endowments” attend. I just love the twists and turns along the way, and would love to have all of their magical abilities 😂 It’s soooo good.

I’d definitely want Evie, she’s my books equivalent of a D&D Ranger. She can navigate, she’s good with a bow and arrow, calm (but snarky) in a crisis, and probably knows the woods already 😊

I’ll always recommend Percy Jackson, but a lesser well known MG series that I ❤️ is the Charlie Bone series by Jenny Nimmo. Also The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann.

I got to DM for two first time players of D&D this weekend. They had never played before but wanted to after seeing Stranger Things. Nerve-wracking as that’s a high bar and they’re not going to be doing all the cool stuff that experienced players are. But they enjoyed it and will play again - yay!!

As a reader, I like short or medium chapters. Nothing worse than getting to the end of a chapter, checking the length of the next chapter and then just closing the book because it’s too long. I write shorter chapters and worry about that, so your post was reassuring to read!

Miles looked at her for a moment. Why would she bring it up if she didn't want to talk about it? Even in this virtual world, girls made no sense. Then he remembered something his dad had told him after his parents had had a very loud disagreement: “Son, if a woman is ever angry with you, there is one thing that you can say that will always get you back on their good side.”
“I love you?” Miles had asked his dad.
“No, no,” Miles' dad had said with a gentle laugh. “You say 'I understand if you don't want to talk right now, but I will be here if you want to'.”
And then Mr Porter had said just that to Mrs Porter, who threw Maisie's plastic cup at him.

After an altercation with a sea monster, discontent brews in the group.

“What happened?” Hiro asked when they reached the beach.
Miles looked at Evie, waiting for her to explain what happened underwater, but she was looking at a fixed point in the distance. Miles then looked to Zinnia, hoping she might offer some insight but she, too, was looking at Evie.
“When I was underwater there was... something there,” Miles said, deciding that he could be the only one to speak up. “A huge something, maybe a sea monster...” He sighed, wondering just what it was that he saw. “I was trying to warn Zinnia and Evie, but it grabbed Evie.” He looked at Evie, but again, she didn't meet his eyes.

If you like fantasy, then yes, you absolutely do! Book one is good, but sets up so much for the rest of the series. Definitely worth giving it another go. It’s easily her best series.

The Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas is my favourite series for sure. It has everything I love: strong, complex female characters. A rich fantasy world. Twists and turns that you’d never see coming. So good 😍
