Two: Into The Shadows. PENDLETON: I, myself, favour an Irish education. Anyone who has examined the Book of Kells cannot but be impressed by the labyrinthine coils of the Celtic imagination. edge.torpidity.net/s/2/256

Claude Sonnet 4.6 describes the image as: "This image appears to be from the classic BBC Television series "Edge of Darkness", depicting a typical British high street scene, likely filmed in the early-to-mid 1980s. The street features a row of ground-floor retail shops beneath brick residential or office buildings above. Prominently visible is a Currys electrical goods store, which was a well-known British retail chain. Adjacent shops include Solo and what appears to be an opticians. Sale signs are visible in the Currys window display. The street scene captures everyday British urban life of the era — pedestrians going about their business, a car parked along the road, and the characteristic architecture of a London suburban high street, with Victorian/Edwardian-era brick buildings above modernised shop fronts below. The colour palette, clothing styles of pedestrians, and vehicle visible in frame are consistent with early 1980s Britain"

Two: Into The Shadows. CRAVEN: # And he saddled his pony and he went for a ride CRAVEN & JEDBURGH: # It was the time of the preacher in the year of 01 edge.torpidity.net/s/2/483

Claude Haiku 4.5 20251001 describes the image as: "# Image Description This is a close-up portrait shot of a middle-aged man with dark hair showing signs of gray, captured in what appears to be an indoor setting with muted, naturalistic lighting. The man has piercing light-colored eyes and displays a somewhat tense or troubled expression on his face, with his mouth slightly open as if mid-speech or reaction. His complexion appears weathered, and there are visible lines across his forehead suggesting stress or age. The photograph has the characteristic quality of television cinematography from the 1980s, with warm color tones and soft focus elements visible in the blurred background. The lighting is dramatic and intimate, typical of close-up scenes in serious drama productions. The man is wearing what appears to be light-colored clothing, visible in the lower portion of the frame"

The post isn't even internally consistent. If the UK "is taxing itself to death", and if Laffer is right that "taxes can become so punitive they reduce revenues", then why would lowering taxes require you to cut spending?

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

A number of lesser-known British aircraft types which played a part (however minor) in the Second World War have been somewhat lost to history. Several of these took part in the Anglo-Iraqi war of 1941, when Rashid Ali al-Gaylani staged a coup with German and Italian assistance. 📷 Frank Wooton 🧵1/19
