Last week, we had the opportunity to assist with seine surveys in the Valley Creek drainage (Jefferson County, Alabama) for the newly described Birmingham Darter. We sampled several sites to better understand the distribution of this recently described species. #conservation #biodiversity

Cave Flatworm (Sphalloplana percoeca), Madison County, Alabama, USA. Feb 2024. Subterranean flatworms are relatives of the planaria you may have dissected in a high school or college biology lab. Most species are depigmented, lack eyespots, and seldom longer than 20 mm. #caves #nature #wildlife

The Bluespotted Sunfish (Enneacanthus gloriosus) are tiny sunfish native to small freshwaters of SE US. While common, many don't see them because they get to a few inches & live in dense vegetation, but can be caught microfishing or dipnetting. They primarily food on zooplankton 🐡🐙🐟#SciComm

Rather interesting looking Trumpeter Swan amongst this group that flew by while I was out taking photos on the weekend. I'm assuming some sort of injury or birth defect. Regardless, didn't seem to be slowing him or her down. #wildlife #birds
