I'm off to #Manchester today for ManCAD Capers. I'll be presenting a poster with my preliminary results from my GP service evaluation of #tinnitus and #hyperacusis, so I'm quietly excited. I'm also looking forward to seeing the lovely people in the #audiology community I only see at conferences!

Second year progression review: passed! 🎉 Quite a milestone after a year of surveys, hundreds of responses, realist reviewing, analysis, writing, presenting – and lots of learning. Now officially heading into the final year of my PhD. How did that happen? 😳 #PhDLife #UoN #NIHR

I loved Antonia Hodgson's Thomas Hawkins books, really brought Georgian England to life, so I was intrigued when I spotted this fantasy novel in Toppings in Edinburgh. It's been a joy - yes, all the usual fantasy tropes are there, but it's also a crime novel with plenty of twists and turns.

It would have been my dad's 85th birthday today. He would have loved this glorious weather - he always said the sun shines on the righteous! I miss him all the time, but not in a painful way now - I miss sharing things with him, like seeing the unafraid baby robin on our garden path yesterday.

Sixteen years ago this week, I got a phone call offering me a 16-month maternity cover contract working for a charity I’d never heard of, focused on tinnitus — a condition I’d experienced myself but knew little about. I stayed for 14 years.

We were very lucky with the weather and spent a lot of time out walking, taking in some fantastic scenery (including this unfiltered sunrise view from my bedroom window) alongside visits to the bustle and culture of Glasgow and Edinburgh. Now back to work feeling rested and recharged!

I really did need the chance to relax, refresh, and properly switch off for a while. A PhD is important, and I'm very privileged to have the chance to undertake one, but I don't want it to become all-consuming.

Back at my desk after a very enjoyable week away in #Scotland I think many PhD students know the feeling of guilt that can come with taking a break - I feel as though I should always be reading, writing, analysing, or thinking about the next thing. But time away really does matter.

Doctors can't prescribe anything for tinnitus, so they think they can't do anything. At least in the UK, they can refer to audiology services. Resources from @tinnitusuk.bsky.social can be helpful, too, as self-management is universal
