さておき、自分が採用する一人称の大半は「わたし」「ぼく」「おれ」の三種類、各々漢字表記とカタカナ表記があるため倍の六種類、これに「アタシ」を足した七種類でほぼすべて。まあ、普段日常会話で使うのはこのへんかな、と。平仮名表記を使わないのは別軸の話で、そもそも文中において平仮名とカタカナと漢字を分散させて視覚的に言葉の区切りを作りたいため、後ろに「は」が来やすい一人称を平仮名にしたくないという理由による。また、かなり口語的な文体を採用する場合、この「は」は基本的に省略することになる。その場合、後ろに漢字が来やすいため、カタカナ表記が概ね都合がいい。ちなみに、この文章は一人称「自分」が使われている。

むしろ各々の一人の人間らしさを重視する。とはいえ、結果的にそれなりの分散になる場合が多いが、現実でまず使われない癖の強い一人称はリアリティラインが低い作品でもあまり採用しない傾向にある。これは自分の癖だが、あまりに作り物臭すぎると心情的に真面目に受け取りづらくなるので。無論、そのほうが相応しい作品もあるにせよ。あとは、そもそも人称代名詞をほぼ使わないという話もある。英語と異なり、日本語は主体や客体を省略しても文章は成立し、むしろ現実の人間同士の会話はほぼそうだ。故に、ここまでして決めた一人称も、初登場時のどこかでは出すようにする場合が多いが、後は一度も出ないこともザラで、それぐらいで構わない。

たとえば、長期間閉鎖環境で共同生活をしていくと人間は自ずと似通っていくもの。あるいは、ある人物を際立たせるために、他を揃えてコントラストを作るといったこと。無論、これらの要素が作中で変化していくならば、それに応じて一人称も変えていくものだが、ハデなギミックなので乱用せずキメの一箇所に絞るのが好ましい。一段高い視点に立てば、登場人物を描き分けるために一人称は分散させるべきか、という話がある。セオリーでは分散させるべきで、変えておくと良い翻訳と評価はされやすい。が、自分が一人称を決める際にこの比重はかなり低い。そもそも、ゲームには絵があるため、テキストでそこまでキャラを際立たせなくても区別はつく。

翻訳にあたり一人称をどう決めるか、というのはもしかしたら書くに値するテーマなのかもしれない。考慮するのは主に三点で、1. 属性 2. 関係性 3. 統合性。1. 属性は性別、年齢、役職もろもろから通常想定される選択肢を外さない、という程度のよくある話。2. 関係性は人物間の関係で決めるという話。人間は相互に影響を与え合っており、言葉の使い方はその一端と言える。例を挙げると、ある作品は男性四人が出てくるが属性の点で全員「おれ」にした上で、関係性を示すために「俺」の二人と「オレ」の二人に分けた。つまりは、こういうこと。3. 統合性は全体で一人称にどこまで分散を持たせるべきかといったコンセプトの話。

にわか翻訳論というのは表現と意味を分離し、英語の表現をそのまま日本語の表現に置き換えるのではなく英語の意味を捉えて訳出するものであるというソシュール的なイデオロギーに染まっておるのですが、まあこれ自体はいいとして大事なのは結局のところ日本語の表現としてどう磨くかという話で、わかりやすく言えば英和辞書がやっていることが翻訳かというと概ね翻訳ではなく、あれは意味を意味に置き換えるのが仕事で、そもそもその文章は何故その言葉を選んだのかという表現のレイヤーを移し替える工程が肝心要で、皮も肉も剥いで骨を剥き出しにしても痩せさらばえた文章が生まれるだけなのです。

辞書を引くと言葉の意味は離散的に紐解かれるのですが、現実の言葉の運用や持つ印象には連続性があり、どんな言葉も複数の意味からなる範疇を有しており、英語のある単語がもともと持つ範疇と今ここで使われている範囲をともに日本語のある単語とどこまですり合わせられるのかというのが翻訳をやっていて最も難しいポイントだなといつも思うのですが、この感覚をうまく説明できている気が今まさにしていませんし、別にできなくてもいいのかもしれませんね。

結局のところ、ビデオゲームのテキストとは文芸とも映画とも異なるというところから話を始めなければならないし、個別個別についてこのゲームのテキストはあのゲームのテキストとは違うという話を続けなければならない。それはつまり、ゲームというもの自体への理解であり、ゲーム個別への理解なしにはあり得ないのであるが、ことゲーム翻訳という話に及ぶと要素技術の話ばかりが先行するため、なるほどこういう努力があるのだな、というところで留まってしまい、何故そうあるべきなのか、それが良いのか、という価値判断に至らず、故に我々ゲーム翻訳者は互いの仕事を評価しないのではなくできないのであるという思いが強まる日々でございます。
