I’m of two minds, too, I think people should be able to be perverts about whatever they want. I felt fetishized and frankly unsafe to speak up, though. A lot of that is to do with my own past, where I’ve had my sense of agency stripped away by authority figures

Part of the reason I tend to feel so uncomfortable in queer VN social spaces is the overwhelming fat fetishization I’ve experienced. It wasn’t even directed at me, I just saw people bemoaning others losing weight, always asking for characters to be plumper, and I felt uncomfortable

I know people dismiss genres as mere marketing categories but I do think they are much more than that, or at least can be. They're entire aesthetic traditions with their own histories, styles, and developments. That's very interesting (I think at least).

Another quirk is "arbitrary" distinctions have real effects on literary history. Should magical realism have been grouped with SFF instead? Maybe. But the fact that it wasn't changed the course of what is published in literary fiction world and the SFF world (see: worldbuilding focus)

Genres themselves are not static and are constantly being created and dying. Hell, what genres exist even in one culture (America in 2026, say) change by medium. The genres of TV are not the same as the genres of the bookstore. E.g., there is no great mass of medical drama literature.
