It’s coming along. 🧶 (Lots of tinking back so far but I think I’ve got into a rhythm now.)

! Thank you!🥰 Hopefully I’ll end up with my first cardigan (and not just a tangle of yarn)! I’ve made 4 pullovers so far but never a cardigan (because they’re intimidating haha) 😅

I’m the busiest I’ve ever been with work so, of course, I’ve decided this is the perfect time to start my most ambitious knitting project (having only started knitting last year). Any guesses what it’s (hopefully) going to be?🤓🧶

Thank you!! I was unsure about the colours for a while as I was knitting it up so I’m glad to hear they look alright! The pattern is by Jake Henzler (aka Boy Knits World).

I finally made time to seam up and sew the zipper into this cushion I knit a while back. Not only is it practical, but I learned a few things with this one, which are usually my goals.🧶

It’s really sad to think that man can’t get through a day without AI and he clearly cannot fathom that other people can do so easily or that AI’s gains are not worth its myriad drawbacks to many people.

But then the mum is “The Mother” because otherwise it would be confusing for it to accidentally seem like Klara was calling her “Mother” in relation to herself.

awkward but also gives a sense of wanting to be friendly and respectful at the same time. Somehow “The Manager” feels more distant because it’s _only_ a role but doesn’t feel like a stand-in name so there’s even less sense of relationship to Klara.

Nicole Miles @nicolemillo.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
That’s the same in the UK. I liked how people’s descriptors are their identity for her before she knows their names and “Manager” (instead of “The Manager”) feels fitting because it ends up being a stand-in name while preserving a semi-formality. Like if someone says “Miss [first name]” it’s…

Honestly! Very rough.😅 I am curious why this was set in the US with a few British characters thrown in when the author is British and I assumed usually sets stories in Britain (though I may be entirely wrong since this is the first I’m reading him). Should I read into that? Maybe not…but I am lol

Hahah fair. I’ve heard Remains of the Day is the author’s best despite(/because of?) being a real slow burn and I’m curious to check it out because of what sounds like some clever writing with a narrator who makes the reader infer things, and Ishiguro’s writing style didn’t bother me.

Nicole Miles @nicolemillo.bsky.social · 02/08/2026
That’s not to say I like the mother, I’m just pretty neutral about her. She’s whatever.🤷🏾‍♀️ I mostly like Rick and don’t mind Helen so far (but I’m not enjoying the narrator’s “British” accents too much 😅)

I’m only at the part where we have just met the portrait artist and father so can’t speak much about them. I don’t mind the mother (I feel like she is hardly in it and doesn’t say much anyway?). I dunno. Josie is the one who annoys me the most and no one else really triggers me lol

I find the idea of grief and loss and replacement & coping how it’s explored in the book pertinent with the whole dysfunctional AI relationships coping thing we are seeing happening now IRL, among other themes. I didn’t feel like it needed to be more subtle but I get if you might prefer it that way.

I’m interested in seeing the film (the film trailer is why I picked up the audiobook), mostly because I like Taika Waititi as a director and I feel like he’ll probably do a good job with it. Or at least it’ll probably be aesthetically pleasing.

It’s definitely more character focussed than plot focussed but I feel like the “character” its focussing on is the nature of relationships and memory and I liked what connections are made to some of the stuff were living through now. I get that that may seem cliché so that take isn’t for everyone.

Nicole Miles @nicolemillo.bsky.social · 02/08/2026
I find certain characters’ dialogue more stilted than others (Klara’s obvs, though that’s intentional, but Josie’s esp which is annoying). I don’t find it particularly jarring elsewhere. The story doesn’t feel aimless to me. I have more the opposite feeling of seeing the beats of where it’s heading.

I don’t think you’re missing something just because you have really different taste to folx who like it. I can think of soooo many books that people (whose literately opinions I hugely respect and often agree with) love that I *really* didn’t, and vice versa 🤷🏾‍♀️ I find the disagreement interesting.

lol I’m listening to the audiobook at the moment and I like it. Not groundbreaking or anything, sure, (though novelty is not really something that determines whether a story is good or bad for me), but I’m enjoying the writing and flow of the story.

If these jokers are keen on actually championing banned books, they’d be yapping about contemporary banned books by creators who are affected by bans today, not “banned” books that are regularly studied in the English classes of the audiences watching that insincere “celebrate banned books” content.

Nicole Miles @nicolemillo.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
Whenever I see people talking about banned books and nobly fearlessly championing banned books and the sharing of knowledge and other experiences and so on, it’s always classics that have long since stopped being banned or are widely distributed and accessible despite their banning.

I regularly think about how I’m not taking advantage of the vast majority of museums and art galleries being free in this country. Especially considering how good I feel visiting these places (/even/ when I don’t like the exhibitions).

Never talk to a federal agent, don’t try and “out smart” them. Lying to them is a federal crime. Slickest thing you can do it say nothing. Slam that phone/door and call a lawyer or legal support. also don’t be private about agents calling around. warn your community.

it's basically the number one rule to any medium ; you can't just tunnel-vision and pigeon hold yourself into a corner. that niche may feel comfortable but it's stifling and prevents you from seeing "the bigger picture" in any sort of artistic/cultural context

I appreciate that you’re trying to make me think I’m not living in the bad version of this universe, but I’m also keenly aware that there’s still time for a terrible Paltrow Galadriel reboot.

I’m challenging myself to read at least 6 books about art this year. I’ve read these ones so far. Slowing down a little as work ramps up and the books I’m picking up get longer though.
Four book covers: CREATIVE DEMONS AND HOW TO SLAY THEM by Richard Holman & illustrated by Al Murphy, USEFUL WORK VERSUS USELESS TOIL by William Morris, WAYS OF SEEING by John Berger et al., and HOW TO LIVE AN ARTFUL LIFE but Katy Hessel.

And I say that as an introvert who is very happy in her own company for extended periods of time so it’s not a critique of introversion but of something beneath that veneer which, frankly, just feels insidious. I have no better word for it at this time.

Why does it feel like there is something insidious about all the “slow living” crowd that go off to the countryside of wherever to buy a cottage in the middle of nowhere? Something just sits uncomfortably with me about the championing of anti-community/isolationism/financial privilege as a virtue.

I tried Ecosia for a bit but I use DuckDuckGo now because they have a greater emphasis on privacy and you can actually turn AI off *including* in the image search (and you can report anything that slips through), which you can’t do with Ecosia.
