Voting: what seems to persist is a way of reading politics as a confrontation between camps, and it gets expressed on whichever side you were socialized on: no more populist candidates, but more extreme ones (to the left and right).

Interestingly, the association is larger where media freedom was (ex-ante) greater and where radio and television reached more of the population. That is, where the confrontation between populists and the actors they cast as elites was most visible.

Second, populist rule erodes trust in the epistemic voices that could challenge the narrative and who are typically labelled as part of the elite to fight: formative exposure is associated with lower trust in science and scientists across six measures.

2) Maybe it's not about economic policies, just narrative. We show several things. First, analyzing speeches, populist parties display a much high zero-sum framing 0.67 SD higher than other leaders

We test several channels. 1) Maybe their policies affect economic outcomes, which in turn trigger zero-sum views? No. The effect is concentrated outside recessions, and it's larger where populists face stronger institutional constraints and thus less likely to implement policy.

🚨 WP with Cevat Aksoy Giray and @harrypickard.bsky.social "Populist Rule and the Formation of Zero-Sum Beliefs". Individuals exposed to populist leaders (typically divisive narratives) develop more zero-sum beliefs decades later in life, which translate into more extreme voting choices.

About content: - Most Kai’s interactions were factual queries (course info, scholarships), while human counselors handled more subjective questions (e.g. "Am I patient enough to teach?"). Students did not interact the same way with humans or bots

Some early learnings analyzing conversations: - Kai led with 35% initial engagement > than human counselors (28%) - Kai responded faster & more factually focused. Kai and humans covered = number of topics per conversation. - Kai seems more efficient: simillar info, similar engagement, shorter time

FF: now there are AI-powered bots. We created Kai—a 2024 generative AI chatbot on WhatsApp designed for more tailored, adaptive interaction. We trained them for many months. In a new RCT with 43,000+ students, we compared: Human counselor versus Kai (AI agent) vs control.

It's very human intensive. In the same experiment (2020) we used the technology available back then to try to scale it up: scripted bots. They achieved only ⅓ to ½ of those results and they were insignificant. They lack the engagement and personalization essential in counseling.

Scaling successful human-centered programs often encounters the “voltage effect”—they lose impact when expanded to more people. Generative AI may help bridge that gap. Here's a story:

The effects of a progressive tax reform
Tax progressivity is a cornerstone of government redistribution efforts worldwide. Yet, despite its widespread use, much remains unknown about how individuals respond – not just in their stated preferences, but also in their actual behaviour. This column examines the real-world impacts of a progressive tax reform in Argentina and finds causal evidence that the reform had significant effects on tax compliance. The authors explore the broader implications for understanding taxpayer preferences and improving the design of tax reforms.
