A short anti-AI thread: I was reminded of the proofreader who was hired for two volumes with which I was involved a few years ago. The proofreader is extremely capable & conscientious about the job, & proved immensely helpful, especially beacuse they knew a lot about the subject matter as well.

I received an email from IndexerLabs, addressed to myself and my co-author, mentioning our forthcoming book and offering their services to help us make an index. No idea how they got our details or knew about the book, but if this review is to be believed (and I do), they're a shower of AI shite.

Everything that's supposed to make everything simpler ultimately makes everything more complex, and in a way that makes everyone more unhappy, because it cuts human beings off from other human beings & is not actually there to make things simpler at all; it's there solely to make rich twats richer.

Book index word sorting orders. There are two kinds, word-by-word and letter-by-letter. My brain prefers word-by-word, but some publishers require letter-by-letter so my brain gets a bit upset when it produces peanut, peanut butter, pea pods, peas, pea sellers, pease porridge.

Shakes head at latest efforts at getting AI to write 'history'. Yes, it is regurgitating material it has been fed in a way that looks academic and relevant to topic. No, it is not doing research and it is not bringing new material or new ways of looking at said old books to the table. No-I, not AI.

It's still that job and I'm wrestling with text by an author whose first language is not English. While it is a creditable and interesting book, it just hasn't had enough done to make all the phrasing sit nicely. 😱

One of 'those' jobs this week that demand a lot of time outside the text because the author can't spell place names the same twice, can't always get the English version of European personal names right, and just leaves words out of sentences. Indexers are the last pair of fresh eyes.👀

Feel sorry for @emiliekmmurphy.bsky.social but what a hot mess this is. AI has no role in working on manuscripts for publishing if this is the best it can do. If this has been done by a human, it was someone who is not qualified/trained to do it and had no understanding of the text, and ditto.

Also wondering about the weather tomorrow - how bad does it have to be for an outdoor brass band event to be cancelled? We are planning on putting up a gazebo in the first slot and playing from 12:30 to 2pm.
Three columns from a weather app labelled 1200, 1300, 1400. 1200 and 1300 show clouds with sunshine and lightning symbols and 94% and 75% rain, 1400 shows cloud with rain and sunshine and 100% rain.
