Dozens of heatwaves linked to carbon emissions from specific companies

Tom Lehrer was an amazing polymath combining science with clever humour and musical acumen. I hope his songs will be replayed for a long time to come.

Unsurprising, but nevertheless tragic. Makes it very hard for integrators and multidisciplinarians to exist in academia. #academicsky

Weekend re-reading of Cybernetics. “Let us remember that the automatic machine is the precise economic equivalent of slave labor. Any labor which competes with slave labor must accept the economic consequences of slave labor.” Let us never forget our humanity - first and foremost.

I have been trying to embed systems thinking and systems approaches into universities for a while now. So hard to get traction. Everything devolves into capability sales exercise. Anybody been successful at this? How did you do it? #academicsky

Tried to get access to Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics today via my university’s library. Available as online book only. Multiple Shibboleth errors later, the ereader on the Cambridge Uni Press won’t load. No access. A foundational text of western thought. #academicsky

What a great idea! VCs will shudder though given the perceived cost and academics on standard 40:40:20 will run away because of workload concerns. Who does the work? Or am I just being too jaded here?

Yea we should, but we shouldn’t wait until they are post-docs. We should start at undergrad level with a core subject curriculum followed by a “research stream’, a “practitioner stream” or an “entrepreneurship stream”, depending on aspirations.

The spinelessness of this is shocking. We must respond with our dollars.

It’s a grim milestone and not something that I wanted my first post to be, but it seems that earth has breached the 1.5 degree heating milestone for the first time: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Earth breaches 1.5 °C climate limit for the first time: what does it mean?
The threshold has been exceeded for only one year so far, but humanity is nearing the end of what many thought was a ‘safe zone’ as climate change worsens.
