Took a sunset photo tonight that’s obviously a t-rex cloud dashing across the Jurassic plains.
Red and orange sunset on a flat plain with a cloud shaped like a t-rex running across the horizon.

It snowed like a son of a gun today, so I’ll look back at these sunsets from as far back as yesterday to remind me how fleeting the good weather can be at this time of year. Jk, it was frigid af when I took these photos and my hands hurt so bad after. #Winter #Sunset #photography

With the prompts dropping tonight for NYCMidnight’s #ScreenwritingChallenge, it feels liie a good time to reshare the 1st page (& a bit) from my short, Salty, which was born from the 1st rd of this contest a few years ago. It’s evolved since, but still one of my faves! #Scriptsky #FirstPageFriday
First scene from a short script, titled Salty, written by Nick Wasilieff

The scene begins:

INT. OLD HOME - LIVING ROOM - DAY
Teacups. Collector plates. TRINKETS. A shrine to kitsch...

...and Jesus, whose framed image hangs crooked on a wall.

A dozen crosses of varying sizes surround him.
The monotone voice of MAURICE sounds out.

MAURICE (O.S.)
It's not normal for me to receive court-appointed clientele.

The aged voice of BRENDA answers as we see many photos of her displayed on a mantle. Always alone. Aging with every picture.

BRENDA (O.S.)
I heard you, umm, specialized in a certain type of therapy.

MAURICE (50s, bald, gaunt) listens from an armchair. The top of his head shines in the sunlight.

MAURICE
Ahh... So you're experiencing paranormal trauma?

BRENDA (O.S.)
Yes.

MAURICE
Is the spirit here at this moment?

BRENDA (70s, frail, frumpy) shifts on a plastic-covered couch. Scratches at an ANKLE MONITOR. Through large, thick glasses, her eyes are exhausted.

Behind Brenda's couch loiters J.A. (male, 17, a ghost). Bloody. Gray-skinned. Straggly shoulder-length hair. He wears a uniform of a blue polo and tan chinos. Only Brenda can see and hear him.

J.A.
Am I present, BrenDUH?

Brenda nods. Trembles. On the brink of emotional collapse.

MAURICE
If the spirit were still of this world, would I see them in their current placement?A continuation of the first scene from a short script, titled Salty, written by Nick Wasilieff

The scene continues:

BRENDA
Mm-hmm.

MAURICE
For your eyes only. Fascinating.

J.A.
How many times I gotta tell ya? Say sorry like you mean it, and I'll peace out.

Brenda is uncomfortable.

BRENDA
Sorry...

And unconvincing.

J.A.
Nah, I ain't buying it.

MAURICE
No reason to be sorry. Situations like this are never easy for the spirit or the haunted.

J.A.
What a dweeb.

MAURICE
Your personal connection to this spirit must be profound. Please enlighten me.

Brenda drifts into a daze.

The scene ends.

For this #FunPageFriday, I’m posting two pages from my current WIP, “The Proving Grounds,” a noirish comedy drama set in 1959 Las Vegas. #Scriptsky #Screenwriter #FirstPageFriday

Less distant now...

ELLIS (O.S.)
I'm ruined! God dammit, I'm ruined!

The sound of fast-paced footsteps approaches Leyland.

A hand squeezes Leyland's necktie. Yanks his floppy head up.

ELLIS (late 50s, smooth tanned face placed between a FEDORA and a HAWAIIAN SHIRT) has a maniacal look in his eyes.

ELLIS (CONT'D)
Wakey, wakey, you son of a bitch!

Ellis backhands Leyland. SMACK!

Leyland jolts awake.

LEYLAND
Aye! I'm awake! I'm awake!

Leyland gazes up at Ellis. Concerned.

LEYLAND (CONT'D)
You okay, Ellis? Everything good?

ELLIS
You've ruined me, asshole!

LEYLAND
Wh-what happened?

ELLIS
Unbelievable!

Ellis releases the tie. Leyland's head clunks to the dirt.

ELLIS (CONT'D)
Leyland fucking happened!

Ellis paces. Turns and kicks dirt at Leyland.

Leyland heaves himself up off the ground. He winces. Groans.

A pile of smouldering rubble sits where Dough Re Meat once stood. In Leyland's terms: It's a goner.

Leyland locks eyes with the destruction.

LEYLAND
Oh, no! No, no! Ellis, this isn't
my work. I'd never do this to youThe fourth page from a script titled “The Proving Grounds” written by Nick Wasilieff.

The page starts mid-scene right after the previous image:

ELLIS
But you had everything to do with this, you absolute donkey!

LEYLAND
I... Uh... I...

ELLIS
When was the last time you had control over anything in your life?

Leyland shrugs. A non-verbal plea for forgiveness.

ELLIS (CONT'D)
I've told you over and over again
to retire! You need to get out.
This past year has been nothing but
scorched earth for you!

Ellis lets out a hopeless laugh.

ELLIS (CONT'D)
There's nothing but smoke and rubble behind you.

The pile of smoke and rubble smoulders behind Leyland.

Leyland fails to understand.

LEYLAND
You know I can't do that. It's all
I got! Ever since --

ELLIS
Horse shit! I got out of it and was doing fucking great until you ruined it! You need to find something to do and someone else to latch on to because I'm done!

LEYLAND
You have insurance, right? Ellis,
please tell me --

Ellis winds up and PUNCHES Leyland in the face.

Leyland crumples to the ground. He whimpers.

Ellis looms over him.

ELLIS
I might not be a god-fearing man, but that doesn't mean I welcome the Devil at my doorstep.

For me it’s two movies. Neighbours, which made me realize how much I loved physical comedy (the airbag scenes absolutely send me). The second is Game Night for two particular scenes: The “searching for the bullet in his arm” scene, and the “grunt in the turbine” scene.

Poster creative for a script titled “The Proving Grounds” written by Nick Wasilieff. The artwork shows a landscape of Las Vegas in 1958 with an atomic mushroom cloud in the background. The first page of The Proving Grounds written by Nick Wasilieff.

EXT. DESERT - NIGHT
SUPER: Outskirts of Las Vegas, 1958

The sound of shovels piercing sand mixes with a crackly, peppy, DOO-WOP SONG from a nearby radio.

Moonlight accents dunes of sand.

In the distance, silhouettes of mountains form a valley against a stardust sky.

Human shadows move in the foreground. Their actions unclear.

More digging sounds. More doo-wop.

FLASH.

From the valley, an INTENSE LIGHT burns up the sky.

The lustre reveals TWO MEN who dig a grave.
Behind them, a crashed car's front end is wrapped around a power pole. Smoke billows from the engine. It's recent.

A WOMAN'S BODY keeled over the steering wheel. Sequin dress.

A flower pressed in her blonde hair.

From the light, a MUSHROOM CLOUD hurtles into the sky.

EXT. INDUSTRIAL PARK - NIGHT

Pitch black.

SUPER: One Year Later

SNAP. A match flickers. Outlines of weathered hands appear.

The match fizzles out. The hands disappear.

LEYLAND (Off screen)
Shit.

SNAP. Another match. Another flicker. Another fizzle.

LEYLAND (Off screen) (CONTINUED)
Shit!

Continued darkness. Seconds pass

You can’t hold it against yourself to enjoy a sunset. You’ve already lived an entire life within a day. But a sunrise? You’re wasting time. You have a whole world in front of you. The outcome of the day hinges on how smoothly the morning goes. One slip up—one wasted millisecond and the day is shot.
