Nick Wan @nickwan.bsky.social · 08/10/2026"small projects, well done" is a recipe for success. several people have placed as HM or finalists with simple methods that are defended well. how to defend a good concept? correlate with public metrics, have it provide another angle to describe a play/event, find year-to-year correlation, etc. 110
Nick Wan @nickwan.bsky.social · 08/10/2026there's a lot of notebook spam on kaggle. i've made my claims well known to kaggle staff and BDB organizers. it will be difficult for beginners and novices to differentiate between predatory vote-4-vote kagglers and actual, helpful notebooks. try to find a community to share work with. helps a TON 100
Nick Wan @nickwan.bsky.social · 08/10/2026lots of comments and messages around about how great BDB is for careers (in NFL, sports, and just in general for quantitative or comp sci related roles). that's all still true after 7 years. don't wait for the next one. if you have time, it's not too hard to get going on a cool project 110

Nick Wan @nickwan.bsky.social · 02/10/2026- some outliers are removed because they were projected high - the tests are multilingual and are reported to be ~8th grade reading comprehension (US 8th grade) - there are also checks for multicultural interpretations - casting a very wide net for applicants so please don’t be shy applying 010
Nick Wan @nickwan.bsky.social · 02/10/2026short faq from DMs: - x axis is inverted because the measures are actually the existence of opposite traits (feeling out of control and not feeling in flow). Particularly for flow, I’ve measured it as alpha desynchrony from resting state baseline, which appears in z transform as negative values 100

Nick Wan @nickwan.bsky.social · 02/10/2026But of course: does it play? And it’s cool to see here: more often you’re in flow state (or can get to flow state), the better the projection gains are — and this correlation is stronger than the emotional regulation factor! 120
Nick Wan @nickwan.bsky.social · 02/10/2026There are other aspects of psychology that are much more vague but perhaps more valuable, like flow state. You can measure this via EEG and how much alpha wave you’re producing while doing something (like playing baseball). Not as strong correlation, but seems like strategy usage is helpful 100
Nick Wan @nickwan.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Correlating strategies and the feeling within game is great but everyone will ask “does it help with performance?” Since we collect data, we can compare this back to how much their overall projections change since implementing strategy usage. And while the correlation is weak, it’s not nothing! 120
Nick Wan @nickwan.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I got my PhD in psychology, studying cognitive neuroscience. Using some cog neuro methods in the area of baseball mental performance has been very interesting! Some things are super sensible: positive correlation of feeling “in control” and using emotion regulation strategies in game 150
