Ontario is still writing its rules for datacentres. But Ford's pitchdeck for foreign investors explicitly markets Hamilton’s waterfront for deregulated AI datacentre development, including "sovereign" AI opportunities." Sovereign AI. Built for foreign investors. With no rules. #HamOnt
"Ontario — Your investment partner," reads the title of an investment prospectus circulated by the Ontario government at Mark Carney's private investment summit of 200 foreign CEOsrelevant section: "The Steelport site is undergoing

No AI datacentre proposed in your town? Good. That's the best time to get organized. Before it lands. Whatever you’d do if one shows up tomorrow, do that now. stopthedatacentre.ca Thank you Charlie Angus/@meidascanada.ca for the conversation

This is absolutely going to have an effect on AI search results and bot-summaries. Looking closely at how the page is constructed, that seems to be the point.
A new CDC webpage, seemingly engineered for bot-ingestion, states "the claim 'vaccines do not cause autism' is not an evidence-based claim..."

The datacentre debate is spreading across Canada. Are you a city councillor wondering what you can do to protect your community. Or maybe a very cool person who wants to stop one or more datacentres?

Word on the street is Mississauga will be the next Canadian city to move on a datacentre moratorium.
Instagram post from a packed city hall meeting. The caption suggests Mississauga will soon follow in Hamilton's footsteps and move towards a pause or moratorium on AI datacentre development.

This is why a one-year pause on datacentre builds in the city of Hamilton makes sense. Without loopholes or exceptions. A snippet from my comments to #HamOnt city council earlier this week.

Paying people for plasma feels unethical. But Canada already gets ~80% of its plasma from the U.S. where the system is far more exploitative. We can't pretend there’s a standard of Canadian moral purity that we haven’t already broken. from @torontotoday.ca 🎧 podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/m...

We often treat measles immunity as a solved problem: "Childhood vaccination = lifelong protection" Might be a lazy assumption. A new Lancet study shows a slow, steady decline in measles antibody levels over the years. Does our “once in childhood is enough” thinking still fit the evidence?
"Ten years after measles vaccination, vaccinated individuals displayed high seropositivity. The observed decrease in measles seropositivity in the years after vaccination may indicate waning humoral immunity. However, this systematic review and meta-analysis was unable to assess the relationship between seropositivity and measles infection rates, thus further investigation is needed."

I know you don't write the headlines, André, but this one reads as quite credulous when halfway down the article, Jones says this:
"Mr. Jones told reporters on Wednesday that the scope of the hybrid model could actually be “broader than surgical activity.” He said it could include other doctors, such as family physicians, but did not provide specifics."

PHAC really doesn't like the word "epidemic" for some reason.
Snippet of the statement, which reads, "Canada is currently experiencing a large, multi-jurisdictional outbreak of measles that began in October 2024 with cases in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories. While transmission has slowed recently, the outbreak has persisted for over 12 months, primarily within under-vaccinated communities."

And how, exactly (one wonders), is a statement such as this made with this level of certitude? That whole novel pathogen concept was just lost on so many people. As science communicators, we need to do a better job of clarifying it for people. Any ideas?
