it was a little disheartening at the time but doing shows for like 3 people is exhilarating, especially if they’re flexible with the 4th wall like a lot of the stuff I did was. Luckily public health has also offered me many opportunities to speak to disappointingly small audiences! Skills cross over

This is incredibly disingenuous from Kirk, he knows exactly how far in advance these non conference games are scheduled; Indiana was dogshit when its games this year were scheduled limiting their options and changing their logic.
Herbstreit singled out Notre Dame in his rant, but he also mentioned Indiana and the need for scheduling to improve for "a lot of teams." Herbstreit's commentary will likely draw pushback from Notre Dame fans, but he focused on the Irish because he's calling their game against BYU this weekend.

It’s really funny to me that this isn’t even the first song this year about how flaky lesbians in Los Angeles are, Dancing on the Wall (MUNA) is about a lady blowing off Katie Gavin (who loves in LA) Maybe it’s the same woman

This was aided by me immediately getting another, better night baking job at a much smaller bakery that I stayed at until I left Chicago. Incredibly great decision

One shift at Mariano’s, it was in the middle of them buying a bunch of stores and expanding greatly. I got a job as a night baker at the biggest fanciest one that was a week away from open and after one shift it was really clear it was gonna be a mess so I bailed. Still have the hat!

Perhaps Turek losing a winnable election while Texas and a bunch of other red places go blue will be a good signal of what sort of candidates the democrats need. His particular kind of stupid cruelty should have no place in the party.

“But Nick, surely Ashley Hinson winning will be significantly worse for trans people and everyone else!” Honestly I don’t know, and the fact that I don’t know tells me everything I need. The senate, relative to the house, governor, or the state house is useless unless 60 people get voted in.

I don’t think I can vote for cruelty. Maybe in 2 years Iowa will be able to elect a senator who isn’t a shithead.

You know what the biggest disappointment about @joshturek4iowa.bsky.social is? He has the power to change the conversation on this. If he was a better person he could have fought back against this BS as an athlete. As a white man looking for power. He’s not a better person. This is it. Cruelty.

It’s because the first limits that would be passed are on abusers rather than black or trans people and *for some reason* they don’t like limiting abusers

The Chicago Cubs won a permanent injunction shutting down Wrigley View Rooftop’s ticket sales. Now the case is headed to the 7th Circuit. The appeal could test how far a sports team’s property rights extend beyond its ballpark, and whether a neighbor can profit from what it can lawfully see.

It’s also notable that you have no answers to my hypothetical just a vague “this sort of argument is bad” thing When you enact policy you have to think about these things: what do you do with the thousands of false positives that pop up? Or do you think we can vibes our way out of that too?

Nick Ostrem @nickostrem.swifties.social · 15/10/2026
Ah, the writer of the article is talented and scrupulously ethical but the award-writer she’s slandering for vibes is…

Nick Ostrem @nickostrem.swifties.social · 15/10/2026
Of course submitting every assignment would be more fair, but that’s costly and increases the number of false positives dramatically. At that point more school resources are taken up trying to find AI use than punishing more severe infractions. Who benefits? Not students. Not universities. Pangram.

Nick Ostrem @nickostrem.swifties.social · 15/10/2026
Of course, as this particular example shows, *who* is suspected of using AI is often racialized and gendered, so if pangram was used only when suspected, it would be subject to the same human failings as any other punitive measure.

Nick Ostrem @nickostrem.swifties.social · 15/10/2026
On their own website, Pangram cites a U Chicago study that found a false positive rate of .001 (0.1%). Lower than everyone else, but when you think about 38.8 million assignments, that’s 3,880 false positives a year.
100 0
Nick Ostrem @nickostrem.swifties.social · 15/10/2026
But even putting this disconcerting instance aside, let’s think about this at scale. Pangram would like every university to use their technology. In the US alone in 2025 there were 19.4 million students. If even just 1 assignment per semester was Pangramed per student, you would have 38.8 million.

I haven’t, but I’ve read the article investigating it and a bad-faith investigation by a weird probable-racist who herself uses LLMs to write is as untrustworthy a source as you could find if you want me to take it seriously.
100 0
Nick Ostrem @nickostrem.swifties.social · 15/10/2026
is it? Because it seems to me like this is a very prominent example of it not being reliable against false positives to the level that it should be if we’re using it as a serious investigative tool

Pangram will get better and then AI will get better to dodge it, and the cycle will continue as all of us get more paranoid, and the only people who truly benefit is rich SV assholes. It’s the same anti-cheat bullshit they’ve been selling to colleges forever but with an AI coat of paint.

This is extra funny because the exact same ad (minus much of the believability because he doesn’t have a voting record and isn’t a Republican) is running about her opponent Her *best* ads are the ones that are just carbon copies of ones running against her (Epstein, misses votes). Negative juice.

Pangram is evil and should not be taken at their word for any reason
Nick Ostrem @nickostrem.swifties.s... • 22d It's about the ethics of using Al in schools
and Pangram is an Al company, that's absolutely a related issue. Pangram loves stories like these because they get to position themselves as the Good Right Defender of Writing despite using the same tech funded by the same people for the same purpose.
It's like like taking Meta at their word about
child safety. Is it an issue? Yes. Is Meta advocating for child safety? Sure, when it benefits them. Should we trust them and cite them unquestioned? No.

Yeah. And if you don't care what Pangram says—it's just another AI company, and I don't care how good they are at hyping themselves—I also don't see what's so "AI" about this story at all. I don't think "trust me, it's bad" is meaningful (and that is quite literally what the article says.)
