Can we also just celebrate the Musukogoji for a sec? For a suit so often written off as the ugliest, I think he has some of the absolute best texturing and detail in the entire series? Just an incredibly consistent sensibility to his keloid scarring and fissures, lumpen malformations, and mutation.

Kamacuras is one of my favorite Godzilla kaiju and I really wish they got alot more love then they do, not only are they from one of the best films in the franchise but there puppetry is super impressive and there designs are beautiful, Kamacuras deserves so much more respect

The differences between Ifukube’s 1962 and 1964 Godzilla pieces are so interesting? Kinggoji’s is a more bombastic, vicious affair, feeling like a call to arms for any who would (try to) stand in his way. Really suits the told-not-shown apocalyptic terror Godzilla is in the satirical film.

It’s part of why the loose trilogy of 1964-1965 is so definitive to me. The melancholy and heightened tone of Mothra vs Godzilla never goes away nor is overwritten by Rodan and Godzilla becoming child-cheering slapstick (or the steady increase of the movies’ sense of humor). It all sings together.

As much as Three-Headed Monster and Astro Monster represent creative headbutting between Honda and Tsuburaya, it’s fascinating how the friction feels far more like fission. The harmony between comedy and drama, slapstick and awe, feels articulate as fuck (especially with Ifukube’s help).
