It is a high honor to be recognized by @commoncauseri.bsky.social as the 2026 recipient of their Excellence in Public Service Award. I look forward to attending the Common Cause RI Annual Meeting and awards ceremony on Oct. 8 - registration is still open if you'd like to attend!

I remain immeasurably proud of the team I've worked with for the last 10 years at the Cranston Canvassing Authority. Terri, Maria, and Emerson are among the very best election officials serving democracy in our nation with nearly 70 years of experience working in elections between the three of them.

On Thursday, I sent an election informational email out to over 200 of our declared candidates in Cranston, and I made this a bold, highlighted, near-top-of-the-list item (out of 30 total items):

No Time to Fail is showing tonight at Barrington Public Library, sponsored by the Barrington 250th Committee - I'll be talking to the crowd after the film along with my co-stars. Election officials overcame so many challenges in 2020 to ensure all American voters could cast their ballots securely.

The clean-up. Three feet of snow is gonna take minute or two...

Nick Lima @nicklima.org · 24/02/2026
This was the National Weather Service probabilistic snowfall forecast for "10% chance" on Saturday night - as in highly unlikely - which I screenshot and shared with a few friends on Sunday, kind of as a joke, "haha imagine if??" Rhode Island blew right past it by a *half foot or more.*

Our polling locations are set up as best as possible to serve voters - particularly those with access issues. This morning, our office inspected four of our 2026 polls with the R.I. Board of Elections, R.I. Governor's Commission on Disabilities, Disability Rights R.I., and Cranston School Dept.

Hard to believe just over a decade ago I was calling Tommy Edman and Will Smith's Newport Gulls championship games, and now they're out there winning multiple World Series titles. What a game... extra innings in Game 7! Congratulations, gentleman!

Last week, prior to the shutdown, I travelled to Washington, D.C. with local election official colleagues from five Rhode Island cities and towns (and many dozens more from around the country) to ask Congress for more consistent funding to support our election security and infrastructure.

The day my elections portfolio folder finally falls apart will be a sad day. At first the stickers were cosmetic, but after 8 1/2 years running elections and carrying this folder around the stickers are increasingly becoming structural.

All you need to know right here about the morale and state of local election administrators in 2025. There are few professions in all of civil service that have been so underfunded, understaffed, ignored in their policy reform needs, yet have so much placed on their shoulders. This is unsustainable.

Cranston really broke the mold when they built this neighborhood (across Spectacle Pond from Twin Oaks) - even street addresses on the odd side of the road, out of sequence, or BOTH. This causes election administration, mail delivery, and E911 response issues; GIS allows us to easily document them.
261
Nick Lima @nicklima.org · 13/01/2025
GIS is an election administrator's best friend... with one glance we can see every polling location, every address that is out of sequence/wrong side, zoning, overlapping precinct, ward, and state district lines, and other data layers to solve voter registration data issues.
