The AA/Reader's Digest Book of British Birds came out in 1969 & changed the quality (& clarity) of bird illustration for ever. Still an amazing book to just browse through if you can find a copy.

My first guide in the 60s was the Observer's Book of Birds, with muddy stamp-sized Victorian bird paintings, & text like "unlike the rest of its family, its character is as white as its plumage is black" (Chough) & "a very tiny, high trilling song like the tinkling of a fairy bell" (Goldcrest).

A patronising old fart writes: Younger birders may not appreciate how revolutionary the 1970 Hamlyn Guide was, with all illustrations facing the text, as we now expect. The Peterson Field Guide had pages of text separate from pages of illustration (some monochrome) & you had to fumble between them.

Always close to the car park, because they are lazy bastards. The first 100 yards of Harrisons Drove at Wicken and the field behind the car park at Drayton Lakes among the worst. At Beechwoods, I've seen them sitting in their cars scrolling their phones having turned the dog loose to empty itself.
