Changing Westminster’s voting system shouldn't be left to the politicians. An independent commission could get the public and experts together in one room to examine the evidence and build consensus for reform. Add your name today: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/76...

We're being told that if we sacrifice the rights of some people, then the rest of us get to keep our rights. We all know that's some BS.

I don’t think anyone really denies this fact though? I get asked literally every time I go for a flu shot if I’ve ever had an adverse reaction to a vaccine.

cool use case of chatgpt work i heard last night:
connect your family calendars and explain your kids' interests.
every morning for the drive to school, have it make a podcast that talks about one kid's soccer game that afternoon, one kid's upcoming birthday, some news, etc.

The issue raised - if you’re interested - is a bunch of flags on lampposts… or at least the ragged-edged remnants of them. Their response? “It’ll wait until the lampposts have maintenance done”. Clearly Reform have absolutely no respect for the flag.

Oh dear. It seems that my local Reform councillor doesn’t grasp that they are my representative on the Council for all issues I encounter in the city, and not just ones falling within their ward. Not that I expected any better.

Usually if something is tacky enough it becomes ironically cool. But somehow this is tacky enough it’s gone through tacky, all the way through ironically cool, and has reached all the way to hitherto unimaginable new reserves of hyper-tackiness.

If the checks and balances can be defeated by a president going “nah, I don’t feel like following those” then they aren’t checks and balances. They’re just polite conventions.

I want to build a nice little theatre, and give it an endowment fund so that it can support local drama groups (amateur, schools etc) with expertise, space and materials, let them take a bit more risk knowing their venue can cut them slack, and so-on.

I hope the opposite. I hope the fact he was here is permanently ingrained in people’s psyche, and is constantly referred to as the reason for enormous overhauls in democratic accountability, checks and balances, and safeguards at every single layer of government.

I’d probably take a few million for myself, and plough the rest into a trust to act as a grant-giver. It can easily outperform inflation, cover costs and still give away life-changing amounts to other charities.

In many ways that makes it even worse, because that puts it in a weird state where you can’t actually do anything with it, and instead rely on *another* reality-distorting layer of using it as collateral for a loan to pay for anything.

Even $100m is a difficult amount to meaningfully give away, never mind 10,000,000,000 times as much!

Nick Jackson @nickjackson.me · 13/06/2026
The problem is that even if you win a mere £150m (comparatively), and you pay everyone’s mortgage, and you set up a trust fund for everyone’s kids, and you pay for a huge holiday for everyone, and you fix the local church roof, and you rebuild the local nursery… you still have £120m burning a hole.

I’ve yet to hear a logically consistent stance on it from the transphobes. Women’s spaces are for women, but not trans men coz they might frighten women, and definitely not trans women because they have a penis, but it doesn’t matter if they’ve had surgery coz women know if a woman is a woman…

You know the part of the movie where the thieves are robbing a jewelry store and then an alarm goes off so they just start smashing display cases and shoving everything in bags on the way out the door? That’s the part of the movie we’re in now.

My hot take is that if someone could just re-invent old google, they’d be set for life. Is it too much to ask for someone to set up some kind of non-profit search engine that just…exists as a public service? Like wikipedia but for searches?

Given Labour’s approach to clear and consistent policy stances it would be entirely on brand to promise one thing, change their mind to the opposite, run on a platform to do neither of those things, and then to start implementing the original promise only to stop halfway.

Some 2/3 of the party members supported it in a poll in January, I imagine it’s now more, it’s just leadership who can’t seem to figure it out.

They have other priorities *and they don’t want people to know about them*, otherwise they could just say “we’d love to do X, but Y is taking all our focus right now”.

Nick Jackson @nickjackson.me · 17/05/2026
What they really mean when they say “it wasn’t in the manifesto” is “we don’t fancy engaging with this right now”. Which is, of course, just a cop out.

In some places it still is, unfortunately. Labour’s big problem is that they simply can’t play nice with others. They can’t bring themselves to stand down in places where another progressive candidate has more chance of winning, because that would mean sharing power.
