There’s no statute of limitations on recommending a great podcast!

15 Cornish pasties is my intended driving snack, so very fitting.

Enjoyed it v much back in the Golden Age of limited series documentary podcasting (they don’t make em like that anymore…)

A sub-question: should I try again with Robert Harris’s Cicero books? Just couldn’t get into it the last time I faced a long solo drive…

Got to drive to and from Cornwall this weekend on my own. Any recommendations for a gripping audiobook or limited series podcast that will keep me sane?

Made this today, in the bath, just in time for the new Celebrity Traitors episode.

Yeah, Which is great, but its core demographic (in my experience) is 40-something-year-old professional men. You & Yours actually cater an audience who are very often the victims of consumer exploitation and wouldn't consider a Which subscription.

Yes! They should cover it.

BBC executives saw Reform receive donations of £72m in 48-hours this summer, and then announce plans to launch a "national publishing organisation". And their response to that? Kowtowing to voters who don't want impartial news, by continuing to hollow out public service broadcasting for generations.

I think the BBC could hold mini-referendums on these cuts, but only announce them live on Radio 4. That way, people who actually listen to the radio could decide the fate of these programmes, rather than executives caving to random weirdos tweeting on X or writing columns in the Spectator.

Archers is the perfect example of my mindset. I loathe it more than anything else on Radio 4 but I will defend – to the death! – their right and responsibility to make it. Also, it sounds like it can't cost more than £5 an episode.

I think the right have successfully convinced BBC bosses that the battle here is the BBC v Netflix or BBC v YouTube, rather than seeing the successes of the private entertainment market as an opportunity for the Beeb to hone its strengths. It's madness.

I always turn You and Yours off the moment it comes on, but it is EXACTLY the sort of show that a public broadcaster should be making. Because, guess what, none of Global or Netflix or Disney or Sky are going to pick up a consumer rights programme like that, despite its obvious public good.

Nick Hilton @nickfthilton.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
But the thinking at NBH presently seems to be "let's see what the private market is doing well, because that's where we're losing audience, and try and replicate that". Madness for the BBC to try and compete with VC-fuelled American streamers and tech companies, rather than embrace its strengths.

I hate this so much. The BBC should be providing good quality, good value programmes that the private market won't cover. You and Yours (which I kind of hate), Thinking Allowed and Free Thinking are exactly the sort of programming that the BBC is i) good at, ii) not haemorrhaging money to make.

The corporation said it would be investing in a new consumer programme, while announcing more cuts.

Having just read the case findings, it must be. But it still all makes no sense. A year ago he was totally denying the accusations. Now this? And he lived and worked in Rochdale, yet seems to be traipsing around the South East...

First instinct on this was "stag do bet" or similar. But bizarre to spend the whole weekend driving around the county, alone, for that purpose.

For 'professional' reasons, I am a member of lots of small town Facebook groups. This bloke has been appearing in towns across Sussex (Horsham, Redhill, Crawley, East Grinstead) with no apparent explanation. This is precisely why I stay subscribed to these groups.

Twice in the past week I’ve had strangers come up to be in Tesco and quite insistently ask to use my Clubcard. They say it’s “win win”, which I agree with on paper, but I instinctively find it suss. It’s not like clubcards are very exclusive. Am I missing something? Or just being overly cautious?

My partner really made me laugh, during that final sequence where they pitch to be Traitors, by saying “if there’s one thing I know about Amol, it’s that he’s good at job interviews”.

Celebrity Traitors starts tonight at 8pm, which probably leaves you with a big entertainment gap between 7:15 and 8 o'clock. Thankfully I'll be on the Front Row review show, looking at Digger, The Standard of Living, and War. Tune in and it will finish perfectly on time for The Traitors.

England is a great country, because once we name a village, that name becomes a sacred, immovable thing (however horrifying the image it conjures may be).

I think I'm about 6-8 weeks away from reading the word 'Burnham' and not still assuming they mean Bo Burnham and being momentarily confused about why Bo Burnham is committing to abolishing the triple lock.

Instinctively like “weird use of the word woman in this headline…” only to discover that the chess community believes that ‘grandmaster’ is a gendered title, and anyone female (regardless of age, apparently) is a ‘woman grandmaster’.

The devastating impacts of the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, the closure of the strait of Hormuz etc continue. The Harry Potter play producers feel that, after a decade, they can no longer charge tourists £175 twice 😢

My most egregiously Westminster-pilled brainworm is thinking to myself “truly a GOVErnment of all the talents - welcome Michael” any time I see Michael Gove doing anything. No longer even sure if that’s the real wording of the tweet, or if the tweet ever even happened.

It reminds me of how the advertising industry had a period of trying to commission “viral videos”. Like, virality was a consequence of excellence (or notoriety), not something you could design.
