When I interviewed Spinal Tap and Marty DiBergi this summer, none of them broke character, for the whole hour. Except Rob Reiner, once, losing it when Michael McKean's David St Hubbins talked about minimalism. I didn't use this in the feature and hadn't published any audio, but this is joyful.

The irony is THE HOT ROCK written by William Goldman who’d write ALL THE PRESIDENT’s MEN a couple later, with, Robert Redford starring in both. (And I largely wouldn’t have MY career without Redford, for completely different reasons.) Audio here: www.washingtonian.com/2022/06/08/a...

A New Watergate Comedy Is as Weird as the Scandal Itself

While in Warsaw this week, I got to visit the Kinoteka and watch the 4K restoration of Amadeus, with a full house. What a joy. Hadn’t seen the film for many years and had forgotten just how funny it is - and how hard that ending hits. The ultimate movie about jealousy. Cinema’s greatest giggle.

There’s a moment in Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours that is the closest I’ve come to throwing up in a cinema: the bit where the knife tip touches the nerve (accompanied by gnarly sound design). Haven’t seen 28 Years Later yet but wonder if there’s anything in it that will elicit the same reaction...

Very sad to hear this. I had two job interviews (with the Channel 4 Daily and Empire) on the same day and within minutes' walk in 1989. The guy who hired me at C4 was gone by the time the show was on the air but Barry took Empire to term and, with Angie Errigo, created a magazine that has lasted.

Very sad to learn that Barry McIlheney, Empire’s visionary original editor, has passed away. Sharp, funny, and bold, in 1989 he and his team laid down the tone and philosophy of the magazine, something we still strive to follow today. Here’s a piece he wrote for our 400th issue a few years back.
