It's hard for me to differentiate "games that shaped who I am as a human" from "games that shape my tastes as a maker of games." It's a blurry line. But these are all games that helped me understand myself in important and discrete ways.

like, just compare the CGI rendition of Firion in the article thumbnail to the original illustration by Amano and you’ll see just how much is lost in the adaptation
Illustration of Firion, a white-haired man with brown eyes and a focused expression holding a red sword horizontally in front of him with his right hand, by Yoshitaka Amano for Final Fantasy II. He’s wearing a cap of multiple colors and textures, a flowing blue cloak, and various details hang in his earrings and from the sword’s hilt.

Album cover of

When the pawn hits the conflicts he thinks like a king
What he knows throws the blows when he goes to the fight
And he'll win the whole thing 'fore he enters the ring
There's no body to batter when your mind is your might
So when you go solo, you hold your own hand
And remember that depth is the greatest of heights
And if you know where you stand, then you know where to land
And if you fall it won't matter, cuz you'll know that you're right

Can’t really think of a game, or major work of artistic continuity, that called so many shots in such subtle but significant ways. Nobody makes ‘em like Toby Fox, I swear

Eugene V. Debs, exactly half a United States ago. (Via @debsmuseum.bsky.social’s Instagram account)
Instagram post from @debsmuseum depicting Eugene Devs speaking forcefully on stage in front of American flags and a small gathering of people. There is a long quote from Debs that begins here; I will transcribe the first paragraph here and the rest in full in the next photo’s alt text.

It begins:

"I like the 4th of July. It breathes a spirit of revolution. On this day we reaffirm the ultimate triumph of socialism. It is coming as certain as I stand in your presence.""A little over a century ago the inhabitants of this country were not citizens. They were ruled by a foreign king.
They petitioned for relief. Their petitions were disregarded. They objected to taxation without representation. Their protests were scorned. Finally they revolted. They issued the Declaration of Independence and enunciated the proposition that men are created equal. But the founders of this republic had only vague conceptions of democracy. The working class as we understand it today were not represented in the Constitutional Convention. The founders of the republic in declaring that men were created equal evidently meant themselves alone. They did not include the Negro, who had been brought here against his will and had been reduced to a state of abject slavery. The institution of chattel slavery was already securely established at that time. It was founded in iniquity, yet it did not seemingly disturb the consciences of the founders of the republic.
This institution was in conflict with the spirit of the Declaration, with the genius of free institutions, and yet it was incorporated in them. It steadily grew in power, and in course of time it controlled the country and the courts and the life of the people."
"On this day, commemorating the 4th of July, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was issued. Thousands of orators all over this broad land will glorify the institutions under which we live. In pride they will point toward Old Glory and declare that it is a flag that waves over a free country. I have no respect for the stars and stripes, or for any other flag that symbolizes slavery."
"I am a patriot, but in the sense that I love all countries. I love the sentiment of William L. Garrison: 'All the world is my country and all mankind are my countrymen.' Thomas Jefferson once said: 'Where liberty is, is my country.' That is better. Where liberty is not, socialism has a mission, and, therefore, the mission of socialism is as wide as the world."

"The best thing I can say about our game of the year, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is that it is exactly what I wish Final Fantasy could be, instead of what it actually became. As a meditation on the grieving process and the necessity to find joy and meaning in our lives regardless, it is a triumph."
Screenshot of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. We look over the shoulder of a white-haired character in a black suit as they stare at a garden pathway in front of them. In the far distance, enshrouded in fog, is the Eiffel Tower, broken and bent to the right at the top.

Blue Prince, by @dogubomb.bsky.social, inspired me more as a designer and storyteller than anything else I engaged with in 2025: "Blue Prince is the most intricately constructed puzzle box of a video game I’ve ever encountered. It is also, despite all odds, marvelously well-tuned."

Despelote is "a small autobiographical story that resonates far beyond its modest scope and play time. It captures the whimsy, magic, and harmless mischief of childhood freedom in a way very few games achieve." "If you’re going to play one short game from 2025, make it this one."
Screenshot from Desperate showing a black-and-white living room scene. Two hand-drawn characters sit on either side of a TV broadcasting a soccer match. Baby Steps: "Once you figure out how to walk a few yards, then a few hundred feet, without stumbling, you find a simple joy in it. Joy begets the grace to forgive yourself if you make a mistake and fall on your ass. Grace welcomes curiosity. And thank goodness. There’s a lot worth seeing out there."

Hollow Knight: Silksong, from @teamcherry.bsky.social, is a beautiful, deep, and worthwhile challenge: "And then there’s the splendor of the thing: every screen has something bespoke to showcase, each enemy has a brilliant suite of sound effects, and every moment has a beautiful song to enhance it."
