The French do this better. After the war UK govt should have given the Falkland islanders a referendum on 1. Joining the UK as an "Overseas County" - or leaving Then if Falkland islanders voted to leave there should be a 2nd referendum on 2. Joining Argentina - or independence with UK defence

UK stamp duty is a huge incentive for older home owners to stay in their large homes as long as possible if they think they'll live Kemi's inheritance tax is a huge incentive for older home owners to stay in their large homes as long as possible if they think they'll die But apart from those 2....

Yes & No. My issue is this: Burnham at this stage (I think) wants rejoin. But hes not sure (well no one is) he can get it, so might have to settle with something still good but less. This is yet ANOTHER reason rejoiners should avoid the euro-trap. We might not even need to have this debate...

It would be tremendous fun if she claimed an increase in stamp duty would pay for it....

Anyone remotely near govt CANNOT under any circumstances diss the EURO. I also just dont see why UK should postpone rejoining EU by a decade because the majority for joining the EURO might be about 10 years behind the majority to join the EU....when UK needs atleast 10 years to prepare for Euro..

EU implicitely & explicitely enshrines principle: no member can be forced to join Euro. "The decision is taken by the euro area member states & the country introducing the euro voting unanimously in Council" "Final decision is taken by ALL EU member states" www.consilium.europa.eu/en/policies/...

Joining the euro area
In order to adopt the euro, EU member states must meet certain conditions known as 'convergence criteria'. Currently the euro area comprises 20 countries.

Niall ive added a 6 post addendum to your thread. It would be nice if the *accusation of lies* was removed once youve read it. And as for "supporting monetary union" question. As you know from my replies before: Any UK govt (or any potential member) disrespecting the monetary union would be idiots

But even if you are unwise enough to reject both EUs explicit rules AND implicit actions... There is simply no technical way you can compel a country to change currency. It would be a political own goal & economically destabalising. WHICH IS WHY NO ONE SERIOUS IN EU HAS EVER SUGGESTED DOING IT!

Nick Craw🇪🇺🇨🇦🇬🇱🇹🇭 @nickcraw.bsky.social · 12h
This is why Sweden & Poland are never pulled up on lack/delay of Euro joining. Its for this simple reason: *The EU has explicitely (within its voting rules) and implicitely within its actions left the timing/context of any joining EURO completely up to member states.* It simply cant do otherwise.

Nick Craw🇪🇺🇨🇦🇬🇱🇹🇭 @nickcraw.bsky.social · 12h
The issue I have with Niall - who is always worth a read (even when I disagree with him!) is that all this is common knowledge in the EU. We all get things wrong (myself too many times & im always happy to be corrected). What I dont like is people misinforming posters here, perhaps on purpose.
100
Nick Craw🇪🇺🇨🇦🇬🇱🇹🇭 @nickcraw.bsky.social · 13h
AND....this is before we even get to the critical part whereby any country like Sweden can simply choose not to fullfill any one of the criteria fully to delay EURO entry to a better (in thier view) date...before the process has even begun properly. You must surely know all of this Niall?
100
Nick Craw🇪🇺🇨🇦🇬🇱🇹🇭 @nickcraw.bsky.social · 13h
The EU's own rules do not allow even the REMOTEST POSSIBILITY as member states retain votes on who joins EURO....even if they were to be somehow forced into the process - which of course would be insane. The EU is not insane which is why it doesnt do this. You must know all of this Niall, surely?
100
Nick Craw🇪🇺🇨🇦🇬🇱🇹🇭 @nickcraw.bsky.social · 13h
Not only is it explicitely enshrined in EU. it is also absolute common knowledge implicitely within the EU. And theres good reason for this. For a start it would be economic insanity to compel a country, it would be technically impossible & politically irational. ..& has of course NEVER HAPPENED.

OK Niall let me get this clear 100%. Are you saying that member states do not have a say whether they join the euro or not?

Kemi starting to put clear blue water between Tories & Reform. This obviously a "good thing in itself" - but less altruistically it could also mean Kemi believes the highpoint of Reform has passed... It seems the Burnham change isnt just dragging Labour a bit leftwards, its nudging the Tories too.

So while we are at it, please show me again the paragraph from EU regulations where this is from: "The UK will have to make a solemn declaration on the euro". I'll wait.

Nick Craw🇪🇺🇨🇦🇬🇱🇹🇭 @nickcraw.bsky.social · 13h
"To join the Euro area, EU countries are required to fullfil the..."convergence criteria". Ive no problem with that, indeed that what I said but as you must now the date is left to the member states govts. You know this and this is bad faith of you but if thats how you are playing now go ahead.

Its literally from me, thats why I emphasised it. I spose I could have puts ** around it instead. I couldnt possibly be claiming it as I sense you want to imply from EU seeing as UK isnt a member & so cannot comment on UK joining Euro. Is this really all you've got Niall? You're better than this.

Oh deinitely monetised as well. But I simply have no memory of much of the stuff that happens/talked about today on this. We had old ladies with tins at stations collecting / the cenotaph broadcast that few watched & those nice black & white films with someone like Jack Hawkins in and that was it.

As I always say on these weekly Niall thread: The EU will let you UK back in if it wants. Its totally up to EU. Theres no arbitration board! As such, Uk is duty bound to see whats available, what UK population is up for. Maybe trade reset+, maybe customs union, maybe single market, maybe rejoin.

Then why did they try and buy arsenal & man united first? Why did at eleast 2 gulf states (AFAIK) try to buy Spurs? The petro states want bigger clubs in the big cities. This is not difficult stuff Spa.

Could one argue that a Virus has agency in that it can find a way to replicate and spread against the will/power of human civilisation to achive its goals? Now affix that to a virus with more analytical intelligence & facts than the combined world population throughout history...

Of course. Whats more you should know the Saudis looked at Arsenal & were offered 30% in Man U before they bought NUFC. As I KEEP telling you its an accident Saudis ended up at Newcastle had one of "red cartel" wanted to sell more than a partial stake to them one of them would now be Saudi owned.

Ok workshop it through. Which clubs are brought by petrostates or trillionaires? They arent Exeter, Barrow or Norwich they are the big clubs. NUC & Man City may not have been top 5 when they were taken over but both clubs are historically & in terms of stadiums, trophies, fanbase easily top 10.

Niall, Could you please point me to the bit in the EU regulations where member states have to: "make a solemn declaration on the euro". And while you are there the tools/penalties the EU uses to enforce it if this "solemn declaration" is broken. Many thanks!

Nick Craw🇪🇺🇨🇦🇬🇱🇹🇭 @nickcraw.bsky.social · 15h
"We could easily do a #City…" Of course you could - nobody's disputing that. Would that be good for the game? The league? the smaller clubs?

I assume then you dont understand the difference between **joining the Euro** and **adopting the euro**. I did try to explain it as nicely as possible! :-)

All Richard was doing with mentioning the UK "right" to join the Euro was describing the status quo for new members but emphasing the "rights of members" rather than (as some here do) make it the Euro is done by force. He's correct. 100%.

Thatsa perfectly valid opinion to have. Its an opinion not a fact so feel free. Rather amusing tho to watch you argue the way to bring fairness & defeat the sinister cartel is to allow trillionaire oil shieks who became rich through an oil cartel use that cartel money to buy up everything.

Good news though? Maybe the Conservatives of 1995 & John Major are not completely dead. I for one welcome this revival from the 1990s.

Nick Craw🇪🇺🇨🇦🇬🇱🇹🇭 @nickcraw.bsky.social · 15h
You still havent understand his point. EU member states have a "right" or perhaps better said a "possibility" to ***join*** Euro - provided EU agrees they fullfil the criteria. Any state has the option to ***adopt*** the Euro if they so wish. Thus Richard is just describing the effective reality.

To be fair to @sparxx64.bsky.social I think its worth looking at salary caps. Problem is caps tend to work best in closed league systems (ironically something like the hated ESL). A UK stand alone salary cap would only work if it was as high as top Euruopean clubs. A UEFA salary cap *might* work.

Nick Craw🇪🇺🇨🇦🇬🇱🇹🇭 @nickcraw.bsky.social · 15h
This has been quite an amusing thread. On the óne hand NUFC fans railing agianst the money of the red cartel and want to bring fairness back...to which their solution is let the Saudis & other gulf petro states shower unlimted money on any big club they buy.

"🇪🇺 does not have to grant a "right" to adopt € " I know. Some Latin American countries have "adopted" the $. But if you think theres a greater than 0% chance that UK, Canada or as you say "similar economies" would adopt (as opposed to join) Euro you literally have no idea what youre talking about.

"I don't want to sound critical". Perish the thought! :-)

Nick Craw🇪🇺🇨🇦🇬🇱🇹🇭 @nickcraw.bsky.social · 15h
Richard is in effect correct. As is well know to most people familiar with subject, EU has explicitely accepted member states choose when they join EURO. Some are very fast, some take years, others still not there. In other words EURO is a right but there is no force to pressure mmber states..

Nick Craw🇪🇺🇨🇦🇬🇱🇹🇭 @nickcraw.bsky.social · 15h
Sometimes (& I know its a failing of mine) its really hard to not sound patronising or sarcastic. So let me put this as diplomatically as possible. Anyone who suggests the UK adopt the euro like Kosovo has literally no idea what they are talking about. (thats the polite version).
