While reviewing the Steam Frame, I replayed all of Half Life: Alyx. It's still a singular game, and on the new hardware it sings. But to play it now is to be confronted with the possibility that nobody will be allowed to make a VR game of that scope ever again. aftermath.site/half-life-al...

Will There Ever Be Another Half-Life: Alyx?
Half-Life: Alyx remains the big budget killer app of VR. But playing it again makes you wonder if anyone will match that ambition.

if you find a way to do so, let me know. I'm being serious. The strongest argument I can muster, "you are hurting primarily yourself by allowing the stolen world's knowledge to be sold back to you" doesn't work. People don't care about themselves, let alone others.

I've released my Tone Mapping Analysis tools for comparing tone mapping LUTs, implemented as a Unity project with custom editor windows. Compare how different tone mappers look when applied to HDR .exr images, with comparison sliders and a variety of overlays and graphs. github.com/runevision/T...
A table of different images, each row shown with different tone mappers. One cell shows a comparison slider.Graphs are displayed for each tone mapper row and the Saturation Overlay is applied to the images.

Realizing the extent to which this is true wildly changed my opinions about how to deal with Trumpism, since they're never going to be satisfied unless they're actively dominating everyone else. You can't give them some concessions and go back to the status quo: they're reactionary revolutionaries.

it's just a thing that persisted and adapted through history, swapping one thing (peppers) for another (salt) - or who knows maybe the other way around - to accomodate for a new host location and culture. we really are just conduits for memes. i find that endlessly fascinating.

nicebyte @nicebyte.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
the crazy thing is, someone's grandma burning salt doesn't know there is an indian grandma doing the same thing with peppers. it's just something her own grandma did, and her grandma, and so on, going back into the murky waters of time

2/2 the "evil eye" thing seems to be super deep rooted. For example, in india you ward off the evil eye from a child by circling peppers over their head then burning them. in armenia there is the same exact ritual except with salt. how tf it made it made it all the way across the asia i have no idea

I made this shadertoy five years ago because I'm fascinated by the belief in the "evil eye". this specific amulet should be familiar to anyone from armenia/turkey/iran and might be familiar to people from the balkans. 1/2 www.shadertoy.com/view/7ls3RM

I can see what you mean. PBR Neutral (right side) seems absolutely terrible. No other tone mapper I've tested has this issue, including my own hue-preserving one (left side).
Image with mountains, sky, and blue/pink clouds. Left side is tone mapped with my own hue preserving tone mapper. Right side is tone mapped with PBR Neutral, which is also hue preserving, but looks jarringly wrong, with the pink parts of the clouds being extremely over-saturated.

It really does seem like making specifications and protocols as convoluted as possible is itself a goal, just to make sure certain powers that be maintain a chokehold on the ecosystem

"oh no but what if some proxy injects javascript into your content" I don't fucking care. It's a blog. I don't handle user data. And if the user connects to the net via malicious proxy then they're already compromised.

I hate this stupid bureaucratic nonsense so much. I shouldn't NEED https in the first place. I'm serving plain html pages from an s3 bucket. It should be fucking plaintext. But just because browsers shit their pants when they see an http connection I have to care about "certificates"
