Maybe The Death Riders are a better analogy, 18 months ago everyone hated them for their constant bullshit cheating and interference, now they are beloved by all. Even the guy they tried to murder with a plastic bag multiple times is cool with them.

Man City continuing to dick on everyone is great heel heat, give it a few months and people will be on their side, turning them babyface like Roman Reigns.

In London visiting my brother, ‘oh I walked past the British Museum earlier, are you going to try to see the Bayeux Tapestry?’ ‘Nah, we saw it in France as kids anyway remember!’ ‘I have literally no memory of this’ Shows how good a tapestry it is! Not memorable.

Why THE FUCK is there a PSG shop on Oxford Street. Did my ancestors (presumably) fight at Agincourt for nothing?

Yeah, it is gratifying. A few Christmases ago me and my brother walked past Paul Sinha and I didn’t notice so this is a redemption!

Just noticed BBC News say 'Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agents' rather than 'ICE'... deliberate obfuscation?

Grand Slam France was a hell of a show, I loved hearing the fans chant 'Un, Deux, Trois!' at pinfalls.

Really recommend 'Extra Geography' in the cinema if you get the chance.

It’s allowed people to talk about the historic origins of Zionism and about it only in the abstract rather than the reality. I said in my post you could ‘split hairs’ about whether it’s racism and the pro-Israeli side definitely love to split hairs!

Political satire struggled in the Blair era until The Thick Of It really I think. Just endless Bird and Fortune skits.

Gyles Brandreth saying on the radio that Jeffrey Archer would be remembered as 'a great storyteller'... that's one way to describe being imprisoned for perjury.

Who remembers that weird comedy movie on the BBC where Jeffrey Archer was like a heroic spy who went to perjury to save Princess Diana or something?

Maybe you can split hairs and say that the abstract *idea* of Zionism isn't necessarily racist but I would say the way Israel is acting in real life most definitely is and that's what matters really.

I'm not a Green member so maybe there's strategic elements I'm missing and of course it's mostly a symbolic act but I don't know how you can argue that Zionism *isn't* racism. At the very least it's ethno-nationalism and really in the modern context what is the difference?

He did actually get an audible chuckle out of me in the intro.

In many ways this dichotomy of art vs action is that of the modern times, so many of us have put our faith in the revolutionary potential of art, not in actually doing things. Is this right? I don't know but it makes for better art in itself, and this film is a great example.

In fiction you can have a glorious heroic self-sacrificial death... real life is messier, somewhat farcical and more complex than than that.

Niam @niamsuggitt.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
In the end, the film (as art itself probably must) comes down on art being more powerful than actions I think. Mishima's 'coup' is a comedic failure and you don't actually see his seppuku, instead Schrader cuts to the fictionalised version from one of his stories.

Niam @niamsuggitt.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
The focus of the film is the conflict within Mishima between his art and his actions, which is more important, can they be combined.

Niam @niamsuggitt.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
These sequences are the most visually interesting in the film, just amazing to look at, and the score by Philip Glass is absolutely transcendent.

This is a fascinating, beautiful, complex look at a fascinating, complex man. I love how it's not only a depiction of his final day of life, and not just a biopic, but you also get 3 adaptations of his fiction.

Tonight's movie was 'Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters' which was amazing, I know Paul Schrader has gone a bit weird on the internet recently but that man can make a fucking movie.

An absolute classic, we need more British films like this, not just about Rugby League, but about complicated, realistic working class people.

The film apparently tones down the homo-erotic subtext in the book but it is there in the scenes with Mr Weaver. But really it's about how the team owners exploit the body of Frank and the other players for money, and so do the fans. Is he just an ape on the pitch? Is he a man capable of love?

Rachel Roberts is also great as Mrs Hammond, and it was fun to see a lot of familiar British TV greats in minor roles, William Hartnell (The first Doctor Who!), Arthur Lowe (Captain Mainwaring!) and even Leonard Rossiter as a wry journalist.

Richard Harris is electric as Frank Machin here, a truly amazing performance. Maybe it's because I recently watched Mean Streets but this feels like a precursor to the style De Niro would bring there. Paul Mescal has been trying to do this performance his whole career.

Despite going to a few Rhinos games since I moved near to Headingley I have no great affinity for Rugby League but this is a superb film that uses the sport's unique place in British society to comment on society and class at the time. As Machin says, 'we don't have stars here, that's soccer'.

In honour of Wakefield Trinity's first Super League win tonight I watched their greatest (only?) contribution to cinema in 'This Sporting Life' which is a fantastic slice of 1960s british kitchen sink drama with Yorkshire grit that is right up my street.

Yeah and the way they don't limit it to just AEW, showing clips from other companies, mentioning WWE and 'Neville', still acknowledging Cody and the Lucha Bros, it is about the people involved not the companies.
