Trump’s HUD wants to put their tenants at risk of flooding. Losing their home to flooding may also mean losing their assistance – and even becoming homeless. We’re urging HUD to preserve crucial flood protections. Read on: www.nhlp.org/national-hou...

Title reads: "National Housing Law Project Urges HUD to Preserve Crucial Flood Protections"

Quote reads: “Flooding events have become more frequent and widespread, and put the health, safety, and livelihood of low-income families at risk. HUD should work toward increasing the resilience of HUD-assisted properties. This proposed rule does the opposite.”

Large-scale federal public housing didn’t become permanent until the passage of the Housing Act of 1937. Here are a few ways our elected leaders can keep us safely and securely housed - and preserve deeply affordable homes in the federal housing programs today.
Fridge to-do list titled "To do:" held up with NHLP magnets, with four unchecked items calling to:

Support tenant organizing, including laws to protect collective bargaining power for both public and private-market tenants.

Guarantee assistance to everyone who needs it by expanding the voucher program and making vouchers more effective.

Repair and upgrade existing public housing – and dismantle barriers to build new public housing.

Hold federally-subsidized housing owners accountable when they drive up prices, neglect conditions, and ignore their tenants.

Over 50 years ago, Congress passed the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974, beating back threats to affordable housing by creating a new federal housing program: Section 8. Today, the Trump administration is eroding it piece by piece. Here's how we can fight back.
A piece of worn paper says "On this day, over fifty years ago, The Housing and Community Development Act of 1974 was enacted. A lot has happened since then."

The Trump administration is trying to totally control federal grantmaking and turn it into a politicized game rather than an independent review. OMB must rescind their proposal, because the people it will ultimately hurt are tenants. Our statement: www.nhlp.org/press-releas...
National Housing Law Project Urges OMB to Rescind Proposal to Politicize Federal Grantmaking.

Trump wants to separate and evict immigrant families in HUD housing. NHLP’s Managing Attorney Marie Claire Tran-Leung spoke with @apnews.com about the harm the proposal has already caused in Texas.

The occupancy rate plunged from 91% in January to 43% in May, far below the national average of 94%. “The impact was not limited to undocumented immigrants, but really to immigrants who are here legally as well as people within their families who are citizens,” Marie Claire Tran-Leung, senior staff attorney at National Housing Law Project, said.

If Trump’s HUD proposal passes, thousands of families would be forced to separate - or leave their homes altogether. NHLP’s Senior Attorney Marie Claire Tran-Leung spoke with @bloomberglaw.com about the impact this will have on immigrant families and citizen children.
Graphic has dark blue border on white background. Bloomberg Law’s logo is at the top middle. The NHLP logo sits at the bottom. The title of the article and author name are below: “US Citizen Kids at Risk of Losing Housing Support Under HUD Plan by Andrew Kreighbaum.”

Text reads: “The housing agency’s proposal, though, acknowledges that almost half of the people expected to lose benefits are children of immigrants, nearly all of them born in the US. It would force about 20,000 families to consider separating or leaving public housing with few alternatives available, advocates say.

“The administration might argue they can stay in public housing if that family member leaves,” said Marie Claire Tran-Leung, a senior staff attorney at the National Housing Law Project. “That’s not realistic—especially if the people with status are children.””
