It's called a lens. The refraction of light on two diopters directs light, bends it as you say.

"The American politician may be a psychological type, like the kleptomaniac, peeping tom, or exhibitionist." Guy Davenport, "Making It Uglier to the Airport," ibidem
Poland survived the Second World War better than my hometown in South Carolina. Main Street has rotted into a wasteland. Gracious old homes came down to make way for used-car lots, tacky little finance companies, and drive-in hamburger pavilions. The seven ancient oaks that stood around the house where Thomas Wolfe's sister lived fell to the power saw, and the house itself, deporched, hoked up with neon and Coca-Cola signs, was islanded in a desolation of tar paving and converted into an eatery called, with that genius of the destroyer for taunting, The Seven Oaks. Some two miles of magnolia shad became a glare of festooned light bulbs, and all the used-car dealers are named Shug and Bubber, a semiology I am not equipped to explore. The ugliness of it all is visual migraine. And yet a mayor and his councilmen let it happen. The American politician may be psychological type, like the kleptomaniac, peeping tom, or exhibitionist. He is the only professional who may apply for a job and present as his credentials the blatant and unashamed fact that he has none. (Lincoln Steffens was surprised to discover that city management throughout Europe requires a college degree.) But the explanation of why our cities are being uplifted is not to be found wholly in political penalty, capitalistic exploitation, greed, carelessness, or any one force.

Guy Davenport, "Late Beckett" in Every Force Evolves a Form.
No character im Beckett has ever admitted that existence is other than a cruel joke. But her in Company Beckett reaches into a darker dark than he has hitherto plumes, to ask if the poor jokester didn't, after all, create us, his joke, to keep his lonely self company? This is a way of asking if in our profond and agonizing loneliness we have invented the jokester, God, to...keep ourselves company? And what is company? What have we not done for its sake? For everything human we have made up, beginning with ours names. Our laws, our quaint systems of kinship, our cities, our technology, a Victorian clergyman's carefully researched study of the Sumerian cosmology—fiction all. We've made it all up, to hide a mystery in an idiotically decorated box. The only reality is that we became aware of the world on our back in the dark (the womb, the cradle), with a voice speaking to us, and will end on our backs the dark (deathbed, grave). Beckett in Company connects these two points of existential helplessness. We are forever on our backs in the dark, listening to a voice (dreams, the imagination, philosophy, religion, Walter Cronkite). But, as he says, the voice is company, or we are company for it.

Screaming child outside...
The world will take your life. But above all and lastly the world does not know that you are here. You think that you understand this. But you dont. Not in your heart you dont. If you did you would be terrified. And you're not. Not yet. And now, good night.

Bad day at work...
He raised his hand high. I am the Count of Monte Cristo! he shouted, I am the Count of Monte Cristo! He kicked at Mac's drink and smashed it to the floor, then kicked at the glasses next to hum on the bar, hearing them break, shouting through the absolute clarity now in his head, I am the Count of Monte Cristo! You bastards, you sent the Count to war! He was screaming now, and someone at the far end of the bar started for the door. Hold it, you basstard! Hold it! You ain't calling no bulls on me! The man stopped, shrugged, walked back to the bar. Frank began moving quietly and casually down toward McGinn, smiling sickly. I am the Count! I am the Count, he was crying now , weeping freely, his arms at his side, the pain back in his head, his eye, his ears, the bar had gone silent to him, there were movements feet scuffling, he saw them through the tears, out there they moved through their lives in dead silence, I am the Count of Monte Cristo, you mothers' cunts! he screamed, the tears running down his face, dropping down on his faded fatigue jacket, dark stains spreading on its front as Mac and Frank helped him to the floor.
