ngp @ngp.computer · 06/10/2026There's no way it would happen for most tables. Maybe like "here's a picture book your characters were read when they were 3 that takes 5 minutes to read". Reading novels in the setting helps the DM more than anything, but it's also entertaining because it's not a dry lore dump 000
ngp @ngp.computer · 06/10/2026All this is to say that you should generally leave lore to be built up at the table. Your players probably don't care (unless you're running in LotR setting and your players are nerds about that) and *you* (the DM) would get more enjoyment out of reading a novel in the setting than pages of 'lore'. 110
ngp @ngp.computer · 06/10/2026It's so unapologetically impotent as a setting useful to DMs that you would be better off ripping off real Greek myth and history to get a more interesting sandbox. 100
ngp @ngp.computer · 06/10/2026... and proceeds to do absolutely nothing with setting up conflict between them outside of two very specific cases (both of which are between humans and non-human factions). All other conflict is relegated to historical 'oppressors' that are no longer in the picture in any meaningful sense. 100
ngp @ngp.computer · 06/10/2026Just to call out a specific example, I really like the setting of Theros from WotC. I ran a several months long campaign in the setting. But it was also immensely frustrating to use for anything beyond very small episodic adventures. It goes to great lengths to set up many diverse factions... 100
ngp @ngp.computer · 06/10/2026This is why I find most "setting books" or lore-heavy games to be either poorly made (as is the case for many WotC 5e books) or overly prescriptive (as is the case for most of the Vampire series). 110
ngp @ngp.computer · 06/10/2026My personal preference for preparing lore is to establish broad strokes of the setting, enough to set up values, tones, and key characters for each faction and conflicts between them; leaving details to be improved at the table (and noted in notes for later). Flexibility at the table is nice 100
ngp @ngp.computer · 06/10/2026It's also a lot easier if lore is presented to players via characters. It's bound to be a lot more relevant to whatever is actually going on in the adventure and it feels more natural. 100
ngp @ngp.computer · 06/10/2026Just how like the average construction worker probably has little idea who the king of England was 500 years ago, the average adventurer probably isn't going to know who their king was 500 years ago either. 100
ngp @ngp.computer · 06/10/2026Now, there *are* some ways to avoid this, such as framing most 'lore' as hearsay, myth. Most of the time player characters aren't academics (though sometimes they are!) and not necessarily well versed in the history of their world beyond 'common tales' (at least in fantasy settings) 100
ngp @ngp.computer · 06/10/2026This is really why I don't like large, comprehensive 'settings': it's sooooo easy to hand-wave something away into a inconsistent corner. I tend to find them more stifling than helpful in most situations 100
ngp @ngp.computer · 03/10/2026I want to play a tabletop game that gives the same wacky feeling that Earthbound does 000

ngp @ngp.computer · 29/09/2026I hate that developers are now a significant enough demographic that warrant large ad budgets 000
ngp @ngp.computer · 29/09/2026I tweaked something in my next again and it's been hurting super bad all day. No idea what I did. I hope it feels better tomorrow because it has been distracting enough that I wasn't able to focus on anything much today :( 011
ngp @ngp.computer · 28/09/2026This is exactly why I ignore like 1/3rd of the rules on Chronicles of Darkness games 000
ngp @ngp.computer · 27/09/2026I guess character progression via item is orthogonal to attributes vs skills, but items can reasonably be taken away/lost in dramatic twists or betrayals while skills... sorta can't? 010
ngp @ngp.computer · 27/09/2026More realistically, I like equipment and magic items being a distinguishing factor in Cairn / Into the Odd and offers a natural narrative justification for 'getting stronger' that doesn't require 'combat as sport' style of encounter design. 110
ngp @ngp.computer · 26/09/2026As opposed to the more nebulous 'backgrounds' approach, which is sufficient but makes makes it less 'concrete' and has little opportunity to turn it into discrete character progression. 000
ngp @ngp.computer · 26/09/2026As someone who vastly prefers simpler systems, I actually like the Storypath (Chronicles of Darkness) system's character attributes and skills. Mechanically it's still very simple (not that the rest of the system is) but does a good job at making each character feel unique 100

ngp @ngp.computer · 23/09/2026You don't even really need to 'remember' it, the compiler tells you if it can't infer it. I think it would be nice to have everywhere, but I don't feel particularly strongly about it. 000
ngp @ngp.computer · 23/09/2026It *usually* can be inferred though, unless you're exclusively using it in APIs that take in Trait objects 000
ngp @ngp.computer · 23/09/2026tbh I think Rust would benefit from an implicit type name for struct literals basically everywhere. It's hardly magic, type inference is used all over the place anyways. 100
