weirdly enough whenever i go to san francisco it reminds me of england in that way bc itslike really foggy and rainy w nice cliffs and beaches its just way more sprawled out..

i only went for a brief stay like 10 years ago but it was niice.. old seaside town with a old ass castle atop the hill.. windswept beaches and lots of steep narrow streets and colourful houses.. Rare vibe over here

hmm, i should be specific and say i think the only use case of gen ai im actually on the fence about is programming. i dont think its useful or good for visual art, music (im not counting things like stem separation), writing… Sorry for my really long reply lol

same for movie production for example. the "film it on a blue screen and figure the rest out in post". the freedom is alluring, but it means being less intentional/decisive/bold, creatively… lately im leaning more towards being more intentional/taking risks, because it usually makes for better art

i cant deny the allure of being able to rapidly prototype/build shit like that that wouldnt have been worth the time otherwise… but also lately it makes me think "if it isnt worth the time, does it really need to exist?" its like theres always been that filter, and now that filter is going away

and it works for him and he wouldnt have done it otherwise, but its like, man, if you wanna use 30yo audio gear so badly, and you have to spend a week vibecoding a custom app to make that feasible… doesnt that kinda go against the spirit? just use your modern computer and run a daw on it lol

like i have a friend with no programming experience who recently vibecoded an app that makes it easy for him to convert audio files from a bunch of 30~40yo floppies a relative gave him, and then put them on his mpc2000 (also ~30yo audio gear)…

Like, the higher level problem is "building a cross platform image editor", which is obviously doable without AI if you plan for it from the start… But in this case, the problem isnt that, its "make an image editor that heavily depends on proprietary windows only apis work on linux…

The paint.net wine compat layer feels like a good use case for code gen, because reimplementing direct2d from scratch by hand would be practically impossible, shown by the fact WINE havent made any progress on it for 20 years… But it kinda feels like "creating a solution for an avoidable problem"

If its a hard FOR or AGAINST im against, its a net negative to society and isnt worth the cost, but i like to be specific… The hard question for me to answer is "is it useful" because its the hardest "it depends" ever… like its saved my ass while programming a few times, when ive gotten really stuck
