This is not good news for the American people, federal agencies, or the rule of law. I'll never understand how these actions--firing people or terminating ("reorganizing") programs--without Congressional action first are not fundamentally unconstitutional... www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

Supreme Court allows Trump to launch mass layoff and restructuring plans
The justices said they were not ruling on the legality of specific firing plans but simply allowing the administration to launch such efforts while litigation continues.

Interior helped make for a nice weekend, including bikerafting on the Potomac River. Not only did we enjoy National Park Service lands to get out on the river, we saw numerous Bald Eagles, which were recovered from the brink of extinction by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Thanks Interior!

Rep. Timmons just said that 35k nonprofits depend entirely on federal funds. (Narrator: This is not true. But 35k [2%] do have >50% of their income from federal funds.) Also, according to Rep. Timmons, many nonprofit leaders earn millions of dollars per year. (Narrator: this is not true.)

The minority witness, Diane Yentel, is bringing some actual evidence about NGOs generally - like 92% of NGOs having budgets of less than $1M - and also pointing out that many of the current administration's actions are illegal.

Next Interior @nextinterior.org · 04/06/2025
I know the witnesses had to affirm they are telling the truth, as happens with all hearings, but I wonder what the consequences really are for not telling the truth?
100
Next Interior @nextinterior.org · 04/06/2025
It appears that the first witnesses might have not really be interested in actual evidence--say, data and statistics that might give insight into matters of broad importance to the nation. Oh, "seems like but we don't have evidence" - pretty close to a verbatim statement from Krikorian.

Next Interior @nextinterior.org · 04/06/2025
Glad to move on to the ranking member's open remarks, which are focusing on DOGE and Musk, pointing out they're now coming for civil society organizations. Good to point out how many actions are illegal.

Back from enjoying one of our national parks - Antietam - on a quick bikerafting trip with the family. A bit of nature, a bit of American history. Clean water because of laws like the Clean Water Act, and because NGOs like Waterkeepers Chesapeake who keep an eye on things! Speaking of NGOs...
