It’s interesting how being no longer able to afford replacements for broken items forces you to be resourceful and to find ways to fix them.

*sigh*… a TikTok was explaining the history behind the current the Drumcree crisis but started off claiming the Penal Laws, Plantations, and Potato Famine were methods used by the British to weaken the Irish population and replace them with British settlers.

A nice touch to Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood: On one part of the map you can see NPCs with sledgehammers hitting a ruin, a nod to how Ancient Roman buildings were recycled for materials

There should be a law making it illegal for your mic to be off of mute when you don’t realise it is. Silly details like enforcement, practicality, and implementation should not be a concern with this law.

Commentary on Northern Ireland and the Good Friday Agreement over the last few weeks has been funny. Burnham says a Border Poll is off the table in contradiction of the GFA, but when Trump says there should be a United Ireland they’re suddenly committed to the GFA.

Occasionally I think back on how great Game of Thrones was and how it was my whole personality for 6 years. My nostalgic self longs for that hype and cultural grasp, then feels sadness at how irrelevant the last season made it. I refuse to watch anything in the same universe because of it.

Part 12 of music archive ramblings: Over a month ago I had another look at my YouTube history and discovered it then only went back to May instead of March 2015. It then occurred to me that the history viewer may just be a rolling window and that maybe Google held the rest of the data elsewhere.

An issue of having developed an interest in the Great Famine is that I now avoid content online about it because I just get annoyed at how badly people understand the history. An unrelated video caught me half way through when it dropped in.

Saw The Odyssey last night, great watch but as with most of Nolan’s movies, it’s better when you don’t think about it too much. I thought “Our age of bronze is collapsing” was just a meme. It has also kicked off an interest in Mycenaean Greece for me.

Part 11 of music archive ramblings: The Mac HDD hasn’t been as much of a dead end as I thought. I made a brilliant discovery buried in there of iMessages from 2014 stored in a .db file. Though only a short window from the 24th March to the 18th May, they’ve still turned up a number of song dates.

Part 10 of music archive ramblings: Life commitments interrupted this project for a while but I was able to find time to get back into it. Most of my pre-2014 music has dates assigned and I’m in the process of making playlists with some adjustments along the way to fit a vibe or event.

Question on r/AskHistorians asking “Why are so many people obsessed with Byzantine empire?”. Reminds me as a child being interested in the Roman Empire and having my mind blown that it actually lasted longer. It was like a What If scenario actually being real. www.reddit.com/r/AskHistori...

I’ve been speaking what Irish I have to our baby from Day 1 and it’s been great to help me improve and add new words and sentences. Today I asked one of my relatives to speak to them in Irish and they didn’t seem interested in doing so. So this is what minority language struggle feels like.

Part 9 of music archive ramblings: I’ve come down to 311 songs unsorted, 92 of which I’ve assigned dates with strong confidence. I did make the assumption that since I was prolific at checking new releases at the time that I can just use the release date as the “discover date”.

My little project reminds me of a quote I heard before: “We are, each of us, a product of the stories we tell ourselves” Going through old messages to help pinpoint dates and events has surprised me by how social I was when I always had the idea I was fairly solitary in that time period.

I was trying to see if the h264ify plugin would let me play YouTube videos on my old netbook, when this video came up. I didn't realise that Robert Pattinson was an ancient historian as well as an actor. Or maybe they just mixed him up with @roelkonijn.bsky.social and called him in by accident?
A screenshot of YouTube that was definitely not modified by an unskilled hack using GIMP, a program they have almost no familiarity with.

The taskbar of the computer resembles that of Windows XP, as it's a Linux distro known as "FreeXP", and it shows both Firefox and Htop running.

The putative video screenshot has a disheveled looking Robert Pattinson looking at a laptop screen in the lower left corner, taking up approximately a third of the screen, with a blue background on a vertical top-to-bottom gradient (light to dark), and a still from the movie "The 300 Spartans" extending from the top right corner to a third of the screen from the right, and approximately half the screen top to bottom.

The still from "The 300 Spartans" has the Spartans in a hollow "wedge" formation, advancing cross rocky terrain towards four single lines of "Persian" infantry, with the sea to the right hand side and some small trees and rocks on the left.

The title of the video, which is not full screen or in theater mode, is "Ancient Warfare Expert Rates 10 Battle Tactics in Movies and TV | How Real Is It? | Insider", and on the right hand side of the screen are an ad and other Insider videos.
