Think about how little your representatives have said or done to defend their colleague Ilhan Omar. Now try to imagine how little they will do when it's our turn.

Well that makes sense. I live in LA now and have switched to the Dodgers myself.

Yeah. And they clearly carved out exceptions for Dr. Jim Dobson (psychologist, not MD) and Baptist ministers.

What? You’re from Arkansas and not a Cards fan? I learned to be a Cards fan from my granddad. We had the Travelers in Little Rock plus the Cardinals were the only team we could get on the radio. Old times !

I was pointing out conservative hypocrisy here. How they mocked Jill Biden and libs with doctorates but made exceptions for James Dobson and Baptist ministers.

I remember the outrage over Jill Biden’s doctorate. Lots of conservatives said only MDs should be called doctor.

What???? You mean I won’t be able to use my Trump Bucks to buy meds from Trump’s website? But he promised!!!

Exactly. Maybe the government sends us checks now and then.

In other words, you’re trying to “save face” for your opponents.

General principle in sports is that it is considered poor sportsmanship to keep playing aggressively when you have an insurmountable lead.

I was thinking about the 2008 election. And his popularity after 9/11 was far higher than anything Trump ever experienced. But … you may be right. I’ve thought of that myself.

It didn’t help Bush in 2007-2008.

It’s weird and disgusting on so many levels but … isn’t he supposed to be the staunch Christian man? He doesn’t sound convincing in the secular MAGA lane but not very convincing as a Christian either.

Alas, it probably will.

Wow, you really summed it up, including the paradox of MAGA: the Boomers fall for the “make America Great Again” nostalgia for the imaginary past, while the Gen X’rs and younger MAGA mostly vibe to the cynicism.

Guessing they think this will play well with the base but maybe they just enjoy it.

Yep. My point exactly. They disagree but still vote for the politicians who enact these laws.

In the South there may be a higher percentage of less committed evangelicals, so perhaps some can be dissuaded from voting. But overall, I believe that evangelicals are a tough, tough nut to crack. Instead, let's focus on people who attend the mainline churches, as the author notes as well.

Newton Cooper @newtoncooper.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
... the refugees are Sharia-loving rapists and recite Fox News talking points. Now, in all fairness, I'm from Southern Cal where evangelicals are definitely a minority. There's not a cultural consensus in favor of Christianity so those who go to church regularly are the true believers.

They openly talk about politics in their Bible studies. Many are very much involved in GOP GOTV efforts. Some of them run for office themselves. So you can talk about the unfairness of our refugee process all day long, but that sweet evangelical lady will just shake her head and tell you ...

Newton Cooper @newtoncooper.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
I know a lot of older evangelicals and they all are loyal Fox viewers, except for the ones who consume even more rightwing content. In fact, politics is often a big point of agreement between very evangelical wives and their less religious husbands.

Newton Cooper @newtoncooper.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
I respect the author's evangelical background, and, while I agree we should try anything that dampens GOP turnout, I feel they miss a key point: older evangelicals don't base their political opinions on the Bible; they base them on the rightwing propaganda they've been consuming for decades.

In short, Mitchell seems to realize that the Confederacy was BS and white Southern gender roles were stultifying, yet ended up producing the greatest apology for slavery in American cinema that includes the most romantic rape scene.

But … at the end of the day, Mitchell yields. Scarlett’s drive for success costs her the love of Rhett Butler, the one man she never has to take care of and who only yearns to take care of her. If Scarlett had only yielded earlier, the “natural order” of misogyny and racism would have been restored.
110
Newton Cooper @newtoncooper.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Of course, she’s helped along the way by some strategic marriages, and, of course, the loyal formerly enslaved Black people who just love to work for the O’Hara family. Along the way she takes care of all the men in her life. So far, Mitchell acknowledges the misogyny while hiding the racism.
110
Newton Cooper @newtoncooper.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
When we first meet Scarlett, she’s a selfish, spoiled teenager. By the end of the story, she’s grown into a strong, capable woman. In a bid to restore the family fortune, she becomes a successful businesswoman running a sawmill operated by convict labor.

Newton Cooper @newtoncooper.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
I think your Gone with the Wind reference is particularly apt, as it exemplifies how both misogyny and racism are “whitewashed” in the myth of America. IIRC, Margaret Mitchell was a suffragette in her younger years, and you can see some of that in her portrayal of Scarlett.

I want Republicans to be trapped in a hell of their own making: they can’t trash Trump without pissing off his core fans, but they have to trash Trump to try to pick up independents who are starting to hate him.

Isaiah 53:2-3 (NIV) He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

Nor is it Scriptural. Isaiah 42:1-3 “Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight … He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.”

Well, Supreme Court justices are not elected here and look at how that has panned out. At the end of the day, judges are either elected or appointed by politicians who themselves are elected.

Cue the expletives in my head. I don’t think I’m particularly naive but this news really hits hard. This “rebranding” is particularly dangerous because it ties into the whole ethos behind a lot of contemporary white country music.
