Genome-wide profiling reveals 5mC and 6mA dynamics during Flg22-induced plant immunity Matthys et al. @mobi-ugent.bsky.social nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/share/TRRPPG...
Using Oxford Nanopore sequencing, genome-wide DNA methylation responses to Flg22 were compared between Arabidopsis thaliana and Oryza sativa. In both species, immune activation was marked by increased relative 5mC accumulation at (peri)centromeric regions compared with chromosome arms. In parallel, defence-responsive genes displayed an enhanced bimodal 6mA distribution flanking transcription start and termination sites following Flg22 elicitation. These findings identify shared methylation features associated with immune activation across two evolutionarily distinct plant species and associate 6mA remodelling with activation of the immune-responsive transcriptome.

Two-panel conceptual diagram. Panel A shows four line graphs of fitness in control versus drift conditions, illustrating undercompensation (all lines decline), tolerance (all lines flat), overcompensation (all lines increase), and mixed response (lines diverge in different directions), each with multiple shaded lines representing different genetic lines. Panel B shows a biphasic dose-response curve: fitness rises above the control baseline at a low, drift-relevant herbicide dose (labeled "hormesis"), then declines sharply at higher, agronomic field doses.

Instant generation of four-parent-derived autotetraploid rice through an in vitro fertilisation system A #Letter by Sakoda et al. 👇 📖 nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... #LatestIssue #PlantScience
Conventional breeding approaches aimed at crop improvement have been based on hybridisation through crosses between two parental lines or autopolyploidisation through genome duplication in a single parental line. These restrict the number and combination of parental genomes that can be combined in a single generation and are rarely co-applicable. This study demonstrated that in vitro fertilisation (IVF)-based autopolyploidisation using multiple parents is a viable approach that can combine the advantages of hybridisation and polyploidy in rice.
