Who says we don't have fall color in Texas? I took this shot of a bigtooth maple in Dog Canyon in Guadalupe Mountains National Park. The canyon was covered in mighty swales of red and orange and yellow and I felt fortunate, indeed.

It almost looks likes it's waterskiing! These bats are native to Mexico to South America & the Caribbean. There are two species, greater & lesser bulldog bats with a number of subspecies of each. They're also known to eat insects, shrimp, crabs seasonally.

You can SEE why they're called bulldog bats: specialized jaws & cheeks optimized to eat fish, sometimes whole. They're capable of producing chirps & calls of 140 decibels (dB). That's louder than a rooster's crow, a lion's roar, closest to the sound level of a jet engine. WHY?

"The greater bulldog bat or fisherman bat (Noctilio leporinus) is a species of fishing bat native to Latin America (Spanish: murciélago pescador; Portuguese: morcego-pescador). The bat uses echolocation to detect water ripples made by the fish upon which it preys, then uses the pouch between its legs to scoop the fish up and its sharp claws to catch and cling to it. It is not to be confused with the lesser bulldog bat, which, though belonging to the same genus, merely catches water insects, such as water striders and water beetles. The greater bulldog bat is a large bat, often with a combined body and head length of 10.9 to 12.7 cm (4.3 to 5.0 in). It generally weighs from 50–90 grams (1.8–3.2 oz). The greater bulldog bat's range stretches from Mexico to Northern Argentina and also includes most Caribbean islands. While vast, its range is also patchy as the bat is limited to mostly well-watered lowland and coastal areas as well as river basins. I enjoyed covering this one for @livescience.com, especially the description of an ancient mammal relative being "like a chimera", with the back being like a platypus, but the front sporting sharp teeth for rending prey. If only the prey weren't salamanders - one of my favourite animals. 🧪 🐸 🦊 🐍 🦇
