NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Is the movie cynical or earnest? Digger reveals the motivations of all involved, so for me the answer is 'Yes'. Take comfort and disgust in it. 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 12/10/2026The movie is a complicated conversation on a complicated topic, not splitting the difference so much as its saying 'all these things can be true'. Art as an escape, a balm, as absolution. There's a lot to digest. 100
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Tom should at least get a nomination. For the first 10 minutes, i laughed at the novelty of Tom acting silly. He soon dissolves into the role, Tom has left, only Digger remains. 100
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 12/10/2026The opening chaos, with hit and miss humor in overly-long scenes, had me wondering if Inarritu was doing a Yorgo's, or even an Anderson? And then the movie breaks, and i realize i'm a fool. 100
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Digger is my favorite kind of movie experience, where my preconceived notions and reactionary criticism get disarmed as the movie evolves. 110
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Listen i loved Digger but there is no world where that movie was going to be a box office success. 100
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Temple of Doom and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 are my fav entries in franchises and in both cases it's probably due to a bombastic opening musical number. 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Congrats to the Skydance promo reel for making me feel dread. 000

NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Thiel's 'Evil is good' dumb guy rant really unlocks all these dickhead's view of good as a passive act: Evil is something you do, good is simply not doing evil. That's how far they are from realizing being good is not the same as doing good. 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 21/09/2026The sweet spot for video game adaptation accuracy is somewhere between the 1990s discarding most of the lore to make a palatable movie and the boring rote regurgitation of streaming shows. 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 21/09/2026Resident Evil is great on a lot of levels, but for me its proof that these franchise spookums (lookin at you ghostbusters) can succeed as smaller haunted house affairs and not epic battles of epicness. 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 17/09/2026The nu metal soundtrack combined with diet matrix VFX unironically slap, but doesnt make up for the insanely lame cat and mouse they turn the movie into. An insanely great idea squandered. 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 17/09/2026I never saw Jet Li's The One until last night. It's as bad as everyone said, but i find the ending kind of sweet. Evil Jet Li gets to fight for all eternity in the hell dimension, thats kinda everything he ever wanted! 100
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 15/09/2026Waiting for the announcement that Pink has licensed her catalog of cosplayed ethnicities to an AI company 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 13/09/2026My only movie hot take is that Michael Scott naming his production company 'Great Scott' is of equal coolness to Ridley Scott calling his 'Scott Free' 001
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 08/09/2026The Ick (2024) has all the stuff i love about Detention (2011), with one glaring issue: its not 2011 anymore. The edgy culture commentary falls flat, which is a shame because Routh shines in this otherwise fun movie. Kahn's music video chops also keep things breezy & visually interesting. 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 08/09/2026The Akira re-release proves that almost 40 years later, there's still nothing like it. Brought some first time viewers to the showing and they were all blown away, one of those impossible pieces of art where every element is perfectly crafted. 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 05/09/2026My fav part of A New Hope is when R2 won't play Leia's message for Luke and C3P0 calls R2 a fugly slut 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 04/09/2026Onslaught is an uinironic grindhouse flick. Wingard isn't winking at anything, he's doing the damn thing, while also saying hard (and sometimes flawed) shit about how we treat our veterans. Structurally its a tad shallow, but Wingard amps his style to keep things moving. 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 03/09/2026On Project Hail Mary, Gosling was fed lines that Lord/Miller made up on the spot via an earpiece, so i think we can all stop overreacting to the Russo's use of rehearsal/improv. 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 26/08/2026From the guy who made master of none, a showcase for the creators white-knighting, only for it to finale with "im gonna go learn to make pasta!". 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 26/08/2026Class disparity is hard to solve when the plot hinges on our protag choosing to stay poor...but there's a union subplot? so our protag could have said 'its not fair, but we're not gonna get there by taking from each other', instead of 'guess i should try harder!'. 100
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 26/08/2026It's really unfair that one of Keanu's best performances is in Good Fortune, a clueless movie filled with Aziz's typical hollow virtue signaling, except he's chronically out of touch, so he misses the point by a mile. As always. 110
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 20/08/2026When I see a game studio CEO position AI as a consumer-friendly cost & time saving measure, I just assume they support crunch culture. 010
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 20/08/2026Both films have elements that could be turned into emotional motivation - the battle of joining a new family, fueding sisters fighting together - but the writing is so proud of the concept and rules that they miss the opportunity. 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 20/08/2026This series frustrates me. Good visuals, lots of attitude, an ensemble - but it's only here to play out a shallow concept and catchy title. 100
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 20/08/2026Ready or not 2 is, like its predecessor, a pure concept movie. Our hero is surviving for survivals sake, resulting in a series of hollow setpieces with zero emotional motivation. Which may make it an accurate adaptation of hide and seek, but makes for a pretty boring movie. 100
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 18/08/2026Undertone knows it's better than jump scares. 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 18/08/2026We're in a era of Vibe horror, but Vibes done well is called atmosphere, and Undertone nails it. Any brief wandering it may indulge in being driven by the story. Undertone doesnt waste a single second of its tight 94 minutes. 100
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 18/08/2026Perhaps most interesting, i think this one is really geared towards auditory learners: its success depends on how much sounds alone ignite your imagination. 100
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 18/08/2026I can see the podcast angle being pass/fail for people (its the most common crit i saw), but i think it's passively inoffensive (perhaps even lame) on purpose, keeping it a plot mechanic that never overpowers the story. 100
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 18/08/2026Undertone got a lot of slander, but this one worked for me! Skillfully expressing the terror & paranoia of an empty house, not to mention what haunts us outside our headphones, i can forgive its vague(ish) climax because it keeps the conversation evolving during its tight runtime. 100
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 17/08/2026It's funny how JJ Abrams has become a pop culture boogeyman for people who don't understand how movies are made. If he's within 500ft of a imperfect movie, people start coming up with conspiracies about how he stepped in to ruin it. Guys, he's just a producer. 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 17/08/2026His application of horror is the same as It Follows: An ever present terror you cant escape or negotiate with. No one has agency against it, and while that may be realistic, it can make things start to feel stale. 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 17/08/2026I wish i liked End of Oak Street more than i did, Mitchell seems like a cool guy. It's an incredibly sincere horror movie, & its fine...but the tone shifts between family drama & intense horror didn't work for me. I was never bored or frustrated but it sat on the edge of greatness quite a few times. 100
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 13/08/2026It tries for some sort of formal structure by gluing together plot from the novel, but in general its a book ass movie. 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 13/08/2026It's not particularly well-written, shot and often acted, something i want to blame on a difficult shoot. Apparently Annaud didnt write any specific dialog to help in getting funding. But everything else in the movie is very interesting - cast, location, costumes, direction - its keeps you glued. 100
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 13/08/2026The movie centers on repression, both in plot and undertones. Perhaps it's strongest aspect is how he cloaks repressed homosexuality in ritual and tradition. Almost every scene has the monks stealing tender lil touches, and the frigid isolation of the movie pushes it all further. 100
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 13/08/2026The Name of the Rose (1986) will take me some time to process. Annaud combats the dense source material in clever & chaotic ways. The vibes are authentically grotesque, helped by competent old school filmmaking. Pretty funny amazon took the liberty of censoring a movie about repression. 100

NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 11/08/2026Policing plot contrivances (like Spiderman using mass surveillance) is the kind of shit that had 2010's MCU stumbling to make everyone happy. Superhero's are heroes 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 they use their abilities/resources for good. It's implied. 000

NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 05/08/2026I'll never understand what Eli Roth did to continue to deserve our attention. A mid horror movie a quarter century ago followed by Tarantino boot licking? 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 03/08/2026Sometimes 'Epic' is just a euphemism for 'Long' and Spiderman: Brand New Day is both, but it's also probably the best thing since Raimi's Spiderman 2. 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 02/08/2026Brand New Day has me on a Spiderman kick, and while I generally enjoy far from home, it makes a probably unforseeable error: that Gyllenhaal as a cocky space magician is far more interesting than any plot twist could ever be. 110
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 26/07/2026Mortal Kombat 2 (2026) makes Mortal Kombat 2 (1997) look like Mortal Kombat (1995). (I know it's called annihilation, the joke doesn't work otherwise, point is the new MK2 sucks). 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 26/07/2026Someone needs to take the responsibility of making Mortal Kombat movies from American Studio. This shits embarrassing. 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 25/07/2026I had the same issue with this as i did Iron Lung: a story is adapted around vibelore™️, and audience mileage may vary. I get the things its discussing, but again - like iron lung, struggles to fully bring the uninitiated into the horror. 000
NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 25/07/2026Parson's stylistic influences are on his sleeve, but it's not rote imitation. There's a Shining-level confidence, but it cant quite translate it's vague horror to instinctual fear like Kubrick. But to be that close in your 1st film? Truly impressive. 100
