Listen i loved Digger but there is no world where that movie was going to be a box office success.

Temple of Doom and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 are my fav entries in franchises and in both cases it's probably due to a bombastic opening musical number.

Congrats to the Skydance promo reel for making me feel dread.

Bob Chapek is the saddest guy ever who also received a $20m severance package.

Thiel's 'Evil is good' dumb guy rant really unlocks all these dickhead's view of good as a passive act: Evil is something you do, good is simply not doing evil. That's how far they are from realizing being good is not the same as doing good.

The sweet spot for video game adaptation accuracy is somewhere between the 1990s discarding most of the lore to make a palatable movie and the boring rote regurgitation of streaming shows.

Resident Evil is great on a lot of levels, but for me its proof that these franchise spookums (lookin at you ghostbusters) can succeed as smaller haunted house affairs and not epic battles of epicness.

I never saw Jet Li's The One until last night. It's as bad as everyone said, but i find the ending kind of sweet. Evil Jet Li gets to fight for all eternity in the hell dimension, thats kinda everything he ever wanted!

My only movie hot take is that Michael Scott naming his production company 'Great Scott' is of equal coolness to Ridley Scott calling his 'Scott Free'

The Ick (2024) has all the stuff i love about Detention (2011), with one glaring issue: its not 2011 anymore. The edgy culture commentary falls flat, which is a shame because Routh shines in this otherwise fun movie. Kahn's music video chops also keep things breezy & visually interesting.

The Akira re-release proves that almost 40 years later, there's still nothing like it. Brought some first time viewers to the showing and they were all blown away, one of those impossible pieces of art where every element is perfectly crafted.

Onslaught is an uinironic grindhouse flick. Wingard isn't winking at anything, he's doing the damn thing, while also saying hard (and sometimes flawed) shit about how we treat our veterans. Structurally its a tad shallow, but Wingard amps his style to keep things moving.

On Project Hail Mary, Gosling was fed lines that Lord/Miller made up on the spot via an earpiece, so i think we can all stop overreacting to the Russo's use of rehearsal/improv.

It's really unfair that one of Keanu's best performances is in Good Fortune, a clueless movie filled with Aziz's typical hollow virtue signaling, except he's chronically out of touch, so he misses the point by a mile. As always.

When I see a game studio CEO position AI as a consumer-friendly cost & time saving measure, I just assume they support crunch culture.

Ready or not 2 is, like its predecessor, a pure concept movie. Our hero is surviving for survivals sake, resulting in a series of hollow setpieces with zero emotional motivation. Which may make it an accurate adaptation of hide and seek, but makes for a pretty boring movie.

Undertone got a lot of slander, but this one worked for me! Skillfully expressing the terror & paranoia of an empty house, not to mention what haunts us outside our headphones, i can forgive its vague(ish) climax because it keeps the conversation evolving during its tight runtime.

It's funny how JJ Abrams has become a pop culture boogeyman for people who don't understand how movies are made. If he's within 500ft of a imperfect movie, people start coming up with conspiracies about how he stepped in to ruin it. Guys, he's just a producer.

I wish i liked End of Oak Street more than i did, Mitchell seems like a cool guy. It's an incredibly sincere horror movie, & its fine...but the tone shifts between family drama & intense horror didn't work for me. I was never bored or frustrated but it sat on the edge of greatness quite a few times.

The Name of the Rose (1986) will take me some time to process. Annaud combats the dense source material in clever & chaotic ways. The vibes are authentically grotesque, helped by competent old school filmmaking. Pretty funny amazon took the liberty of censoring a movie about repression.

Batman - The crime alley Yes i know, another Batman illustration... I just hope you like it! #Batman #Fanart
A lone Batman figure runs forward through a warm orange and golden background, his cape billowing dramatically behind him. Two small red roses lie beneath him as a tribute to his parents.

Policing plot contrivances (like Spiderman using mass surveillance) is the kind of shit that had 2010's MCU stumbling to make everyone happy. Superhero's are heroes 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 they use their abilities/resources for good. It's implied.

I'll never understand what Eli Roth did to continue to deserve our attention. A mid horror movie a quarter century ago followed by Tarantino boot licking?

Sometimes 'Epic' is just a euphemism for 'Long' and Spiderman: Brand New Day is both, but it's also probably the best thing since Raimi's Spiderman 2.

NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 02/08/2026
Brand New Day has me on a Spiderman kick, and while I generally enjoy far from home, it makes a probably unforseeable error: that Gyllenhaal as a cocky space magician is far more interesting than any plot twist could ever be.

Mortal Kombat 2 (2026) makes Mortal Kombat 2 (1997) look like Mortal Kombat (1995). (I know it's called annihilation, the joke doesn't work otherwise, point is the new MK2 sucks).

I don't really want to say anything bad about Backrooms, i can feel Kane Parson's directing skill develop through the course of the film, and i can't wait to see what else he's capable of.

Blomkamp's AI short proves a bad actor is infinitely better than a statistical average of a good one.

NewFreeUpdate @newfreeupdate.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
I saw AI bros call Blomkamp's short film a 'proof of concept', but probably not the one he had in mind. Blomkamp took his one hard skill, an eye for unique production design, and sold it for the 'press button to make movie' machine.

Redux Redux is an interesting start from some new filmmakers, but it gets a bit stumped by its themes. By the end, its just a movie of some stuff that happened one time, and its not quite the film it wants to be. But I think those McManus' gots the sauce in them.

David Mackenzie is a sneaky fav of mine, Relay showed Hell or High Water wasnt a one-off. His latest, Fuze, is an odd one. Well directed, but the script never crescendos. It plays like an NCIS procedural, but the detectives (that bridge the parallel cat & mouse plots) have been edited out.

Sam Neill could always surprise you, like when 13yo me saw him in Jurassic Park & realized he wasn't russian. Pointing out his immense talent seems superficial for a guy who spent his later years sharing the joy of goofing around on his farm. Legend seems fitting here.

For the first hour, i thought Lee Cronin's Mummy would be a new favorite. Unfortunately it lost me in the back half, the bombastic horror overtaking its place in the story. It's a shame, because at the start it had a real 'Spielberg of horror' energy before it gave into it's worse impulses.

Morbid curiosity led me to watch 2019's Charlies Angels, a movie that is so ashamed of it's insanely watchable/sexually awakening 2000's predecessor, that Elizabeth Banks mades self-insert fic that confidently states 'Women can be in generic action movies too!'.

If they made it bright and colorful it would look exactly like the animated movie that they're trying to convince you needed a live action remake.

After 2002 Spiderman, studios tried to apply Raimi's singular voice to all comic book movies. This damned a lot of CBM's that fell under the weight of copying a VERY specific talent. Supergirl is an inoffensive movie that would have been better served not trying for diet-Gunn.
