At a Council meeting earlier this week, councillors backed a motion brought by Liberal Democrat councillor Mark Mitchell (and seconded by Lib Dem councillor Greg Stone) to show that #Newcastle Stands Up to racism. Reform councillors abstained on this motion.

We’re backing our hospitality sector, but not compromising on safety. Last night Council backed our proposal to repeal the Late Night Levy in #Newcastle, an extra tax on a small number of businesses operating in the late night economy. That’s a signal that we’re backing our businesses to thrive.

Ending the late night levy

Council Leader Cllr Colin Ferguson had backed hospitality venues and called for an end to the surcharge in Newcastle.

Council has voted to repeal the levy, a massive vote of confidence for our hospitality sector.

"This backs businesses tackling rising costs, but with a commitment to continue funding vital work supporting safety, particularly women and girls."

Councillors from across the political divide have backed the new Council Plan of Newcastle City Council's Liberal Democrat-led administration. However, despite extensive cross-party engagement, Reform and Independents chose not to back our ambition for the city, without offering a reason why.

While Reform-led councils in the region have pulled their support for charity Show Racism the Red Card's annual Wear Red Day on 16 October, we're proud to announce that #Newcastle will be lighting up two of its iconic landmarks to mark the day.
Picture of Newcastle City Council Leader Colin Ferguson with quote "Newcastle has long supported Show Racism the Red Card, and I’m proud of our reputation as a city that is warm, friendly and welcoming to everyone.

We will proudly be lighting the Tyne Bridge and our Civic Centre red on October 16. I’ll be wearing a red tie for the day, and I’d invite people across the city to join me – wear red and support the day.

We are a city of black and white"

It's time to end the #socialcare catastrophe. New analysis by the Liberal Democrats shows that 2695 older people in #Newcastle were denied care in 2024/25, along with 2185 disabled working age adults. Lib Dems want to work across the party divide in order to find a lasting solution to this crisis.

It's a bank holiday weekend and many #Newcastle residents will be enjoying the city's parks - but after the failure of Urban Green Newcastle, Lib Dems are urging the Council to adopt a serious business plan to safeguard our parks and allotments for now and the future.
What next for Newcastle's parks?

An urgent need for a serious business plan:
- Parks and allotments back under city council's direct control after failure of Urban Green Newcastle (and significant cost to taxpayer).
- Lib Dems warned that forecasts for Urban Green were unrealistic and that due diligence was not followed.
- We're now pushing the council to be clear on exactly how they're going to invest in all of our city's park assets so residents can enjoy them long into the future.

"If we're going to safeguard the future of the city's parks for current and future generations for many, many years to come, we need a serious business plan." - Colin Ferguson, Leader, Newcastle Liberal Democrats and Leader of the Opposition
