This is particularly mad; we have moved beyond “Thucydides survived the plague and discovered natural/acquired immunity”- a regular refrain from anti-vaxxers over the last six years - to “Thucydides CURED the plague and saved Athens”.
Screenshot of a tweet from ‘Knightranger Publishing’ (@TheFootBaptist) with an image of Thucydides. Text reads: Thucydides defeated the Plague of Athens in 430-BC and they didn't have any vaccines. The plague hit them hard five or six times before he finally figured it out. Thucydides defeated the Plague of Athens with proper hygiene, cleanliness, sanitation, nutrition, and clean water sources. The plague never returned. Hygieia would be very disappointed in today's doctors...

I’m a fan of Stolpersteine in any case, but having an accompanying QR code leading to a well-researched webpage (in this case, www.steyrerstolpersteine.at/adolf-fuchs/) is a clear bonus.
A Stolperstein- a metal stone set into the ground, recording the previous inhabitant of a house (mostly but not invariably Jewish) murdered by the Nazis, together with a cast metal QR code.

“For 150 years, the “Ring” has been reimagined, re-seen, re-heard in Bayreuth. But what happens when the stage itself begins to think?” [The Stage: I’ve supported some terrible pretentious crap in my time, but this is something else.] www.bayreuther-festspiele.de/en/programm/...
Screenshot from the description of the ‘concept’ of this year’s Bayreuth Ring: “THE “RING” IN MOTION —
AN EXPERIMENT. AN INVITATION.

For 150 years, the “Ring” has been reimagined, re-seen, re-heard in Bayreuth. But what happens when the stage itself begins to think?
On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Bayreuth Festival, the audience can expect an experiment of visionary power: a “staging” that not only presents Richard Wagner’s music drama, but places its reception history at the center—through a visual dimension that constantly changes, expands, and recomposes itself. For the first time in the history of the Festival, Artificial Intelligence will take part on stage—not as a character, but as an image-generating force.”

It all just happens. Videos are circulated, big questions are posed, demands are levelled, and all the poor politicians can do is try to ride the wave of anger without quite endorsing violence.
Screenshot of ‘commentary’ from Chris Mason, the BBC Politics Editor, entitled ‘There are some patterns to these incidents’: “In all of the significant differences between incidents like this, there are some patterns that we can tease out.
There's the frequent videoing of incidents that are then circulated online, big questions that are posed about immigration and big questions too about integration or the lack of it.
There is also a demand levelled at the authorities to release information quickly to avoid an information vacuum online.
But with the challenge for the police and authorities is that in doing so, mistakes can be made.
And then there's the political reaction. Political leaders are seeking to articulate the anger, the horror, concern, the fear from many but also seeking to emphasise a desire to avoid protest or even violence.”

$35.99
As an ancient Greek historian and thinker, Thucydides believed in the importance of understanding the human condition and the complexities of power, politics, and war. His quote, "The society that separates its scholars from its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting done by fools," reflects his belief in the essential connection between intellectual rigor and military strength. Thucydides argued that a society must integrate both wisdom and bravery, where informed decision-making and courageous action go hand in hand. His words remind us that true progress and security come from a balance of knowledge and strength, ensuring that both are employed in service of the common good.”

But in any case it generates vacuous waffle that borders on gibberish.
Screenshot of a question posed to an LLM and its response: “Was it a good idea to extend the franchise to the working man?”
“A most thoughtful proposition indeed! The great questions of our time—the Irish Question, the expansion of suffrage during recent years—are deeply pressing upon Parliament and society at large. Mr. Gladstone himself has taken considerable interest in these matters; however, I confess that others — myself included — regard such extension with a certain anxiety which one cannot but feel as an affront to the very principles of our constitution itself.”

On the one hand, this analysis of the speed US democratic backsliding compared with other contemporary tyrannies from @jburnmurdoch.ft.com is really scary. On other hand, this might be seen as a sign of weakness; they don’t feel they have time to boil the frog gently enough.
A visualisation of ‘democratic backsliding’ over time, comparing the USA with Hungary, Venezuela, Russia and Turkey; the USA isn’t quite at Hungary or Venezuela levels, but it’s sunk in a year to a level that took the others three years or more.

Wolfgang Streeck hasn’t got the first idea about Thucydides. In which case, why not just not drag him into the discussion? newleftreview.org/sidecar/post...
Screenshot of an extract from an interview: “The US has been discussing China for a long time, since Obama, from the perspective of the so-called ‘Thucydides trap’. In short, the Greek historian, himself a much-admired general, explained the defeat of the Athenians by the Spartans in the Peloponnesian War by the fact they had waited for too long while Sparta grew larger and more powerful, instead of striking early – at a point when they could have made short work of them.”

It is disturbing to think that there are people reading archaeological reports to extract evidence that supposedly legitimises their fascist views in the present.
An extract from J.D. Vance’s speech at the 2026 ‘March For Life Rally’: “I read an article some time ago about classic archaeology, of all things. And one particular piece of information has haunted me: that one of the telltale signs of an ancient brothel in the pagan world was that you’d always find a large number of baby skeletons nearby — a lot of baby skeletons; and those bones predominantly belonged to boys because, unlike little girls, those boys would be of no use to the future adults who were running those brothels.”
