ugh AI YOLO resulting in more platform lockdown
Updates to Full Disk Access in macOS
2. October 2026

We give developers powerful APIs to build incredible capabilities into their apps for Apple products, backed by a set of controls designed to protect users’ private data. Full Disk Access largely sidesteps these controls in order to allow backup apps to function properly on the Mac. Some developers are using Full Disk Access in ways that could put users at risk, exposing everything on their systems—including files, mail, messages, and even browsing history—without users’ full knowledge and understanding. For communication apps, this can also compromise the privacy of the people users are communicating with.
Going forward, we will introduce additional controls to ensure that users who genuinely wish to grant an app this extraordinary level of access can only do so with very explicit user action. Addressing this is critical. As AI agents become increasingly capable and autonomous, the risks associated with this level of access will grow substantially. We are committed to ensuring users clearly understand these risks before granting such access, so they can make informed decisions about their own data and privacy.

OPEN LETTER
11 Sept 2026
Ref:CB108690

Dear Ms Morrogh,

I refer to your letter sent by email late on Thurs 10 Sept.
Your letter wrongly claims that I "dodged a question about whether it was offensive to victims of rape and whether it trivialized rape?". I did not.

I was asked what I thought of rape, and answered that it was a heinous crime. I could not have been clearer. I certainly did not trivialize the crime of rape as you wrongly claim.

I was also asked if describing high fare competitor airlines as high fare rapists somehow trivialized the crime of rape, and I was clear in my view that it did not. I am quite clear that no remarks of mine could possibly trivialize the heinous crime of rape.

You are entirely free to hold a different opinion and we are free to disagree. But since I clearly did not "trivialize" the heinous crime of rape, I will certainly not be issuing any apology or accepting your offer of training.

Finally, your claim that my remarks yesterday perpetuate dismissive attitudes to survivors of rape" is both false and defamatory when I clearly asserted in the same Q&A with the media that rape is a "heinous crime" and accordingly its survivors are victims of a heinous crime.

Yours faithfully,
Michael O'Leary

Extended Stable means 8 weeks ☠️ Google Chrome moving to a two weeks release cycle developer.chrome.com/blog/chrome-tw…
Enterprise admins and embedders:	The two-week Stable option becomes the most secure choice and should be used by most of your enterprise users. The Extended Stable channel is available for customers who cannot accommodate a two-week release cycle.

Note: If your organization or application relies on Extended Stable, keep in mind that while security fixes continue to be backported on the regular weekly schedule, major feature updates arrive every eight weeks (for example, Chrome 156, Chrome 160). Ensure your test pipelines account for these eight-week milestone boundaries when planning enterprise deployments.

> If one writes portable C, does it have to be less efficient
> than non-portable C ?
>
> My project is looking at the "cost of portability"...

I can think of few cases where you can write non-portable but more-efficient
C code. Generally you will find that if you write efficient code, the code
will be portable /but the efficiency will not/. In other words, you can
tune your code to the particular compiler and machine you're running on, and
although that code /will/ run on another machine, it won't be fast.

The standard areas here are: Register variables, of course. Subscripting
versus pointers ( a[i++]  versus *pa++ ).  Pre/post increment/decrement,
especially in subscripts ( a[i]=0; a[i+1]=0; i+=2; versus a[i++]=0; a[i++]=0;).
Size of integers ( on a 68000 system, integers are usually 32-bit, but if
you multiply them you'll want 16-bit ints ). On some machines, "char"s are
slow to access and "short"s would be better; vice versa on other machines.
"Unrolling" loops may be advantageous on one machine, but will defeat the
instruction cache on another.

Now for a more general thought. Hope this doesn't start a flame war.

If you are more concerned about efficiency than about portability, then
consider this: There are 4 basic reasons for writing a particular program
in C instead of in assembler:
 a) If efficiency is of little consequence -- the program is only going to
     be run once or twice;
 b)  If portability is important;
 c) If the programmer is ignorant of assembler; or
 d) If the boss wants "BIC lighter" programmers: cheap, disposable, and
     easily replaceable.

Thus (from the point of view of an outsider) if you're willing to scrap
portability in return for efficiency, you should be programming in assembler
instead of C. From the point of view of the programmer, reason (c) might
be an overriding consideration. From the point of view of the management,
reason (d) might be an overriding consideration.

And when using the IBM i database in SQL mode things are slightly different
Using SQL with Commitment Control

SQL applications on IBM i handle commitment control differently than native record-level access programs:

No STRCMTCTL/ENDCMTCTL needed - SQL automatically manages commitment control through connection
properties or SQL statements
SET TRANSACTION - Use SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL to set isolation level (READ UNCOMMITTED,
READ COMMITTED, REPEATABLE READ, SERIALIZABLE)
COMMIT and ROLLBACK - Use SQL's COMMIT and ROLLBACK statements instead of CL or RPG commands
Connection-based - Each SQL connection has its own commitment control scope, independent of CL-based
commitment definitions
WITH NC - SQL supports WITH NC (No Commit) clause on individual statements for operations outside
commitment control
SQL's approach provides more granular control and follows standard SQL conventions, making it easier for
developers familiar with other database platforms.

the 4 isolation levels
Transaction Isolation Levels
DB2 for IBM i provides four isolation levels that control how transactions interact with concurrent data access. You
specify the level using the LCKLVL parameter on STRCMTCTL:
•
*(CHG) (Uncommitted Read) - Allows reading uncommitted changes from other transactions. Best performance
but least data integrity. Use for reports where approximate data is acceptable.
•
*(CS) (Cursor Stability) - Default level. Prevents dirty reads by only reading committed data. Holds read locks only
while cursor is on the row. Good balance for most OLTP applications.
•
*(ALL) (Read Stability) - Prevents dirty reads and non-repeatable reads. Holds read locks on all accessed rows
until commit/rollback. Use when consistent result sets are required.
•
*(RR) (Repeatable Read) - Highest isolation level. Prevents all read anomalies including phantom reads. Holds all
locks until transaction completes. Use for financial transactions requiring absolute consistency.

Longhorn @never-released.mastodon.social.ap.brid.gy · 03/09/2026
disabling transactions
COMMIT(*NC) - IBM i Unique Feature
DB2 for IBM i uniquely supports COMMIT(*NC) (No Commit), which allows file operations to run without commitment
control even when STRCMTCTL is active. This is specified on individual file opens (OVRDBF or program-level). Files
opened with COMMIT(*NC) are not protected by commitment control - their changes are immediately permanent and
cannot be rolled back. This provides flexibility to mix committed and non-committed operations within the same job,
useful when certain files need immediate updates while others require transactional protection.
Choose your isolation level based on the balance between data consistency requirements and performance/
concurrency needs.

IBM i advanced optimization techniques
Optimization methods specific to the creation of IBM i programs and service programs include the following
methods:
• 8-byte pointers in C and C++ code
The performance of C and C++ code that uses pointers can be improved when the code is
compiled to use 8-byte pointers, rather than 16-byte pointers (default). To take full advantage of

Since the announcement of IBM i 7.2 in 2014, IBM has
worked diligently to provide more open-source languages,
tools and environments that can run inside IBM i. Today, the
number of packages exceeds 350. These are delivered in the
form of rapid prototyping modules (RPMs), a manner traditional
to various Linux distributions, including Red Hat. This new
mechanism allows IBM to deliver new versions of the many
open-source offerings quickly, without waiting for traditional
code delivery through versions, releases or even technology-
