On smooth flat bark covered with light seafoam-to-leaf-green-coloured crustose lichen and bold yellow-green foliose lichen, a squat, shiny red mite with spiky hairs is next to a small woolly white clump, one of several visible on the tree trunk.A closer view shows the mite's pedipalps are buried in the fluff (they were moving around, in fact).

#Arachtober 16: oy gevalt, almost forgot…anyway here's a zebra jumping spider (_Salticus scenicus_). °OO° #DailySpiderPic #spiders #JumpingSpiders #Araneae #Salticidae
Three-quarters view of a small jumping spider on limestone. It has a pair of large forward-facing eyes and its abdomen is striped white and brown. (The colour of the zebra stripes can range from the palest grey to brown to jet black.)The spider looking straight up at the camera. It has a smaller pair of eyes flanking its main pair. Fangs can be seen at the ends of its shiny black chelicerae, partly hidden by fluffy white pedipalps.A view of the spider's abdomen, showing the diagonal stripes of white and rusty brown, formed out of lots of little hairs.

An orbweaver, light brown and black-brown with spiky, banded legs and a white dotted cross marking on the dorsal side of its abdomen, hangs upside down in the relative shelter of a juniper-type bush.A side view of the spider. Note the tiger-like stripes on its sides and the small curved protrusion on the underside of its abdomen—the "scape", a part of mature female genitalia. I'm sure other species have scapes too but the appearance can be used to ID A. diadematus.

A wide photo, with two spiders at the outskirts of a (faintly visible) web against the grey backdrop of a willow tree trunk. The male (left) has longer legs but a much smaller body, and long palps that have "knees"; they are folded over. He has a white folium (leaf-like marking) covering the top of his abdomen, with flushes of pink on the side. The female has a slightly larger head and a much larger abdomen with a shiny yellow underbelly. They are both plucking at the silk lines to communicate.

these are the worst bird pics of all time but I think this heron totally ate it while trying to fish, with a bunch of passersby looking on
Extremely blurry low-res photo of a variegated grey-brown heron of some kind in hunting mode, neck retracted, on a log floating in an algae-filled wetland. The backdrop is a wall of tall bulrushes. The heron has pitched forward off the log and into the water in a way that does not look entirely on purpose. Its wings are spread and a leg is bent; the head is underwater. The heron, looking a little ruffled, back on the log facing the other way.

went down to lake and saw some good bugs 1. long-jawed orbweaver (_Tetragnatha_) 2. crambid moth (one of the grass-veneer moths, tribe Crambini), so confident in its camouflage as a hollow grass blade I could get quite close 3. also very well camouflaged […] [Original post on flipping.rocks]
An extremely long thin spider with a creamy-white abdomen and very long thin translucent golden-brown legs stretched out on a thistle stem.A brown moth with a long cylindrical body/wings, face-down ass up on lichen-covered rock.On similarly lichen-covered rock, an orbweaver in matching shades of grey-brown and pale greenish cream is tucked into a crevice.A fly with a striped abdomen, iridescent eyes and very long thin legs stands on a dead part of a tree trunk with a smaller fly in its mouthparts.

Last night I passed by again. All the little mushrooms were gone but these GIANTS had taken their place (hand for scale in last pic). I could see a stream of spores coming from the largest mushroom! Needless to say I am going to be checking this spot more […] [Original post on flipping.rocks]
Two large round flat-topped pale brownish mushrooms right next to each other, with one of the dandelion plants from the previous post squished between them. One mushroom is significantly larger.A view of the largest mushroom, lit from below with phone flashlight at night. It has thin radial gills.Panned right, you can see that a stream of powdery spores is flying off the mushroom, like steam from a hot bowl of soup.Hand for scale. The large mushroom is easily larger than my (small adult) hand.

This is a spot I pass on my usual night walk route. There used to be a stump here for years, but relatively recently they dug it up and, idk, mulched it I guess? Anyway, it has recently started sprouting some *great* mushrooms. This is from the 7th. (1/2) […] [Original post on flipping.rocks]
A large cluster of small pale grey umbrella-like mushrooms growing amid mulch and weeds. Taken with phone flashlight at night.A little hill of the same mushrooms at the base of a large dandelion plant.Looking down at several clusters of mushrooms. Their caps have a slightly retro-reflective effect in the phone flashlight.A view of the whole former stump site, now mulch and earth surrounded by clover-sprinkled lawn.
