Very happy our work on a weird new nanoscale morphological feature is out in @science.org. A massive effort involving different high resolution microscopy techniques, multiple institutes, & years of work to convince ourselves DENDRITIC NARROWINGS EXIST #neuroskyence 🧪 doi.org/10.1126/scia...

Dendritic shaft constrictions shape synaptic integration in neurons
For nearly 150 years, textbooks have described dendritic morphology as optimized for efficient synaptic voltage transfer from spines to the soma, implemented as a tubular design respecting Rall’s 3/2…

Our new paper is out in Current Biology! We show that Hydra periodically excrete excess water, and that this behavior is controlled by neural integration in a neuronal ensemble. doi.org/10.1016/j.cu... Now continuing this work in my new lab at UA Little Rock!

In our work "single cortical neurons as deep artificial neural networks" we strongly suggested that one biological neuron has a deep network equivalent of computations packed inside it, but never definitively showed what they can do link to the paper on bioRxiv: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

What can a neuron compute? Real biological neurons are complex, but how capable are they? Using a new method, we found that a single cortical neuron can classify cats vs dogs, recognize spoken words, and solve 10-bit parity, all tasks thought to require entire networks. (1/15)

Dendrites have been under the microscope, since 1888. We took it further and put dendrites under 3 different microscopes (ExM, STED, EM) and reconstructed entire branches to reveal fine nanoscale details. #SuperResolution #ElectronMicroscopy #Morphology doi.org/10.1101/2025.07.18.664460

Now out in PLOS CB! We propose a simple, perceptron-like neuron model, the calcitron, that has four sources of [Ca2+]...We demonstrate that by modulating the plasticity thresholds and calcium influx from each calcium source, we can reproduce a wide range of learning and plasticity protocols.

Human cortical pyramidal neurons are larger, with more elaborate branching, and distinct nonlinear biophysical properties compared to rat cortical pyramidal neurons. Are they more functionally complex? Could that boost the human brain’s computational power? and is that what makes us human? (1/11)
