NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 09/09/2026No progress pic today as I'm editing the last pieces of the video together. Now: "I think I have everything." Later: "No, wait - I need THAT shot. Ok now I have everything." Even more later: "No, wait..." #Maker 020
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 07/09/2026Just hang it! To put the piece up, I used two upside-down picture hooks on each side of the frame and looped picture wire through to hooks screwed into the joists. The piece is now done! I hope to get the full build-video out this week yet. #Maker 000
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 04/09/2026Well, THAT didn't work. I think the hole for the heat-set insert was too small, so when I pressed down with the soldering iron it melted too much of the plastic around it and it came rushing up through the middle. Time for another #FreeCad tweak! #Maker #3DPrinting 230
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 02/09/2026RE-boxing pic! I revised the electronics box to better accommodate the USB Power inputs: * Nudge the existing post to the right * Add a post for the second * Shrink both to take an M2 heat-set insert; the holes were too small for the M3 screws used everywhere else. #Maker #FreeCad #3DPrinting 071
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 31/08/2026Power up! The software issues I was troubleshooting last week turned out to be primarily a power issue - or rather, the LACK of power. I added a second USB Power Unit dedicated to the rim lights, and that solved everything. #Maker 000
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 26/08/2026No pic today as I'm working through a mix of software and hardware problems, trying to tease them apart. It's funny that solving a technology problem so often requires getting it to fail *reliably*. 000
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 24/08/2026We'll be coming around the mountin'! I got the rest of the components mounted to the backboard this weekend. I think I have all of the internal hardware in place now. The software is giving me some grief, so that's next. #Maker 000
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 21/08/2026Hardware delivery! I found these 4mm diameter pipe clamps at Lowe's that I'll use to wrangle and secure the growing collection of wires I have inside the box. So many wires. #Maker 001
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 19/08/2026The old tower (first pic) had the tabs that prevent the tower walls from going all the way up, so light was escaping and creating the "halo" (shown with the orange rectangle). The redesigned tower successfully eliminates the halo. One more problem solved! #Maker 020
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 17/08/2026I redesigned the towers (again). The latest version raises the top to remove the tabs which should eliminate the light seepage. I also added mounting brackets. I *think* this is the final version. (At least until the next version comes out.) #Maker #FreeCad #3DPrinting 171
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 14/08/20263/3 My solution was to use one pair of lever wire connectors mounted to the frame, and another mounted to the base. Between those is a lot of extra wire, formed into a simple spring. Now when you open or close the lid, the wires in the middle flex, while the others are locked in place. #Maker 010
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 14/08/20262/3 The lights around the rim come together where the frame and backing hinge. Power was going to come from the electronics mounted to the base, which meant I needed a connection that would flex when the case was opened, and not rip or torque the LEDs. #Maker 110
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 14/08/20261/3 The pre-bent wires I showed last time can be seen at the very top, joining the rim lights to the lever wire connectors. It was very tight, cramming all of that into a corner, but it worked. #Maker 110
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 12/08/2026I'm back to pre-bending wires again. This only happens when I'm working in tight spaces, and once I realized I could do this on the Dr. Theopolis build, it's becoming my go-to solution. I have more tools in my toolkit than a hammer, I swear! #EverythingLooksLikeANail #Maker 010
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 10/08/2026I pivoted again on the issue of lighting, this time opting for a line of LEDs attached to the inside of the frame to simply flood the inside with light. This solves one problem and creates another, unfortunately. Trusting the process, but tripping on the speed bumps. #Maker 020
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 07/08/2026Good news: I've been able to check off some of my "Problems to Solve". Bad news: I've had to add problems to the list. #Maker 020
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 05/08/2026Good news: I got the electronics mounted back in the box. Bad news: I added the relay directly above one of my mounting points, so I can't use it. Go ahead, say it - I have a screw loose. #Maker 020
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 03/08/2026I added a Featherwing latching relay to the electronics package for this piece which will allow me to turn some of the LEDs on and off via software. Yes, I just re-invented the light switch. In my defense, the relay makes the most satisfying click when it switches. #Maker #ASMRElectronics 010
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 31/07/2026The beacons are lit! I got all three LED rings wired in, and I'm happy to report that I didn't use a single alligator clip this time. #Maker 010
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 29/07/2026It's time for a side quest! FIVE side quests, actually. My intended next step was to mark out where the LED trenches would be placed in the plywood backing, but I accumulated several unanswered questions of how things were going to actually fit together. I made a list. #Maker 010
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 27/07/2026I attached the LED strips I prepared to the inner track of the "ledges", which will sit down in the trenches (not shown). Because the strips are oriented vertically, I can bend them around the curve of the ledge smoothly. #Maker #3DPrinting 030
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 24/07/2026To prepare the LED strips, I've surface-soldered wires to one end of each strip. I've pre-bent the wire to form a 90-degree angle to the strip so that when attached they'll go "down" and away from the line. (The reason for that will make more sense in an upcoming update.) #Maker 020
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 22/07/2026I'll be attaching a single strip of LEDs to the three pieces of ledging that make up the inside curve of the trench (shown dry-fitted on the right). To hold everything together temporarily, I've attached the three pieces with painter's tape (left side). #Maker #FreeCad #3DPrinting 030
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 20/07/2026I did a dry fit of the trench "ledges" that will be used to suspend the diffusion film above the LED strip. Didn't quite get the measurements perfect where the bases come together, though. I think I can still work with that. #Maker #FreeCad #3DPrinting 040
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 17/07/2026I didn't start out trying to create a knolling pic, but here we are. I got all pieces of both trenches printed. Now I just have to clean them up. Ugh. #Maker #FreeCad #3DPrinting 071
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 15/07/2026The trench, version 2. Aside from being nearly twice as wide, I printed these white to better reflect the light and added the mounting holes. Each of the white sections is Part 1 of 3. I hope to have the other two pieces designed and printed by the end of the week. #Maker #FreeCad #3DPrinting 020
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 13/07/2026I need the LEDs to form a smooth curve, so I created these frames in #FreeCad. The LEDs will sit down in this "trench", along the inside wall. This first version is too narrow, though. I'll need to make them wider to let more light through. That's why we prototype, kids! #Maker #3DPrinting 040
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 10/07/2026I found a different LED strand, this one has clear points to cut and reconnect it, and it has a diffusion layer built right in. It's also much brighter than the previous. I still have some work to do, but this gets me closer to a final solution. #Maker 000
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 08/07/2026I figured out how to wire the LED rope, but this was as white as I could make it. Additionally, when I cut it, there was no clear way to attach new leads. I should have researched it better and gotten cuttable AND connectable rope. #Maker 000
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 06/07/2026I need to make a couple of turns with the LEDs. But as you saw in the last progress pic, wiring up segments of LED strips would leave a broken-up look. LED neon "rope" gives a smoother look, so I think I need to pivot. Now I just need to figure out how to wire them up to the Lumidrive. #Maker 000
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 03/07/2026I need to create curves with LEDs. My original plan was to use daisy-chained segments of LED strips. That would lead to segments of light, defined by the length of each strip (left), even when under a second layer of diffusion film (right). I need a different solution to smooth out the bends. #Maker 010
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 01/07/2026With a little help from my younger kiddo, I got the other two bases mounted to the plywood. I was planning to mount the electronics box at the same time, but there are some changes on that front. More on that later. #Maker 020
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 29/06/2026I attached the first base to the plywood! The LumiDrive will connect to the grey & orange lever connectors at the bottom. I have a battery-powered book light illuminating the inside of the tower, which allows me to check the alignment with the front design. #Maker #FreeCad #3DPrinting 051
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 26/06/2026I was trying to build an adapter that would convert surface-solder pads into through-hole points. The grey 3D-printed piece bolted onto the LED ring would hold the wires in place. The larger piece this is a part of is a surprise! 110
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 26/06/2026When you're testing a new electrical contraption and you smell smoke... that's bad, right? My side-quest to build an adapter to convert surface-mount solder points into through-hole points was not successful at this time. Back to surface-soldering! #Maker 110
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 24/06/2026I designed the adapter to be a low-enough profile that it would fit below the ring while it was mounted to the white base. I forgot, however, to build in clearance for the base's mounting holes. I'll need to carve out a few millimeters of room for them. #Maker #FreeCad #3DPrinting 120
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 22/06/2026Trying out the Prototype 9 adapter. The screws serve to both clamp the adapter and the wires to the LED ring, and to keep everything lined up. #Maker #FreeCad #3DPrinting 030

NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 19/06/2026If you don't see any differences between prototypes 3-8, don't worry. I was adjusting the placements of the holes by millimeters (and sometimes less). Now we'll see if prototype 9 can clamp the wires onto the LED ring. #Maker #FreeCad #3DPrinting 000
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 17/06/2026Side Quest: Can I build a bracket that allows me to attach wires to the LED ring without going through the process of surface mounting? Can I prevent ruining the pad when I brush past one of the surface-mounted wires? Asking for a friend. #Maker #FreeCad #3DPrinting 010

NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 15/06/2026I got the side cut off to allow the USB cables to enter (slot in the foreground), and got the electronics mounted. The M3 screws I'm using were too big to fit the holes on the USB power source (blue piece in front), so I could only add them to the red LumiDrive. Grr. #Maker #FreeCad #3DPrinting 051
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 12/06/2026I 3D-printed a custom box for the electronics. The four risers with the heat-set inserts are the mounting points for everything. Of course I realized after the fact that I didn't leave a hole for the power cable to plug in. *facepalm* I'll fix that in post. With a saw. #Maker #FreeCad #3DPrinting 050
NessoAsks @nessoasks.bsky.social · 10/06/2026I got all of the diffusion channels cut. Each one is fit to a specific strip of LEDs.
