I do play those games, I think far too many are built on 500 pages of rules. I would love to see more tactical games with lighter rules. The 3-action system for PF2 is brilliant but my group has to re-read a paragraph of rules. Every. Single. Turn. (Even on a VTT.)

I support this! It's a space I design in. Rebels of the Outlaw Wastes is play-to-find-out with a tactical vehicle mode. Got a spin-off in the works with tactical cannon battles. After years of public playtests/demos, I have never met anyone that said get your chocolate out of my peanut butter. 😀

In Rebels of the Outlaw Wastes, players can choose to accept a complication to add a die to the Ride or Die pool. Anyone can spend those dice on a future roll. It often creates a parabola of failure leading to spectacular success.

My time at Gen Con 2026 is done. GMed as much Hotel Olympus as I could, got better players than I deserve, many at the dead center of the venn diagram of Greek myth, mystery rpgs, and player-forward systems like Blades. Really hope more people get to play it, but there's only so much of me.

Working on a draft of our next ttrpg and this paragraph is accidentally the entire ethos of the design:

You might be tempted to plan out an entire mystery ahead of time, the way a designer plans out an escape room or detective video game. Designing a perfectly laid out mystery is hard work. You probably won’t get to test it out before you run it for your friends, and your friends are not mind readers. Even in a carefully planned game, you will most likely need to improvise to reach a satisfying conclusion. Why not plan to improvise from the start?

In my board game design circles, we summarize the second secret here as "fail faster." Design is iteration. I often wonder if carpenters have a bunch of wobbly, uncomfortable chairs in their workshops.
