I either needed to do a mixed model or Bayesian stats. He didn’t know how to do either and refused to learn. Nobody else in the dept did. I taught myself R. Then I taught myself the models. But I had nobody to factcheck. So I had to abandon the entire project and create one in a semester.

I think his disdain began when I pointed out that the stats he had me doing for my project (which he had done on a big published paper w a previous species) was incorrect. My data was non-normal and repeated measures. He wanted me to do a binomial logistic regression. I needed to do a mixed model.

Anyway…here’s to broken dreams and all that shit. I wanted to be a biologist since I was a kid. I work in environmental regulation now because that’s all a masters degree will get you. Last biologist job I had, I was only making $36k/year.

Those two men discouraged me so much and so often. And beat my confidence down so badly that I developed a speech impediment to where I have trouble talking for any amount of time beyond a few sentences. Words won’t come. I was never like that before. A therapist made me realize years later.

One of my other advisors (I had three but the third was a filler) discouraged me from taking his Neurobiology course I remember him telling me that when I see certain animals in his ethology course, I “coo” or fawn after them too much or something. I got an A or B. I’m not sure.
