I've always thought "the taming of the shrew" was a silly idea for a story, as there is no record of shrews forming multispecies bonds with humans. However, I recently learned they've been domesticated for laboratory use, so maybe Shakespeare was onto something. I haven't read the play, no.

After a week off, Hammer Time's back with a look at Lust for a Vampire including discussion of *that song*, what a repulsive creep the hero is, a guest appearance by the crew and much more besides. Get it in all the usual places (including YouTube) and www.evolutionofhorror.com/hammer

I actually had a decent vegan dinner at Haneda yesterday! But yeah, the trip's off. The conference will have to soldier on without me...

Did you know? If the people in the airport say that due to your flight delay your journey will now be 36 hours long and you'll have to rebook all your hotels and trains, you can simply not go? They can't stop you. You can ask for your bag back, and go. You can just leave.

The best part? This is all for a two-day work trip. I'll be spending more time in transit than at my location.

I'd pick a perilous 17th century-style sea voyage any day. Some rum and hardtack sounds amazing right now.

The airline has kindly laid on a sumptuous banquet of snacks to tide us over, none of which are vegan. That's fine. It's fine.

Due to a loooooong flight delay, I'm facing 24 hours of travel after already having been awake for the previous 24 hours. I also have no idea what's happening with my connecting flight, and am missing a bunch of trains I already have tickets for.

#nowwatching The Fog (1980). I'm feeling pretty stressed about being overseas for the next few days, so it's a good time to revisit a film that's a bit of a comfort watch. Ghost pirates! #horrorsky

#nowwatching Terror Train (1980). I'm in the mood for a slasher, and haven't seen this one for a long time! One of the quirkier and more interesting films from the slasher cycle, from what I recall. #horrorsky

My favourite of his! Especially the ending, which is very clear and makes sense and is not at all confusing.

I think you'd like their other horror titles - lots of the same people in front of the camera (Cushing, Lee, Price, etc.), and behind.

The first few Suzzanna films I saw were really good fun, but by the time I got to this one the formula was wearing a bit thin...

I've seen all the anthology films, the doctor who adaptations (boo!), and a few of their other films like The Skull, but there are still several horror titles of theirs I need to check out.

These are pretty good horror entry points for kids! Pretty tame, but with enough scares to get them curious.

It's just another term for an anthology film, particularly those associated with Amicus.

#nowwatching Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965). The first of the excellent portmanteau films from Hammer's main rivals, Amicus. I adore these Amicus anthologies - just invested in blu ray copies of the whole set! #horrorsky

An interesting, experimental film from Hammer. The circus performers make the whole thing feel fantastical and otherworldly, and it kept my attention in spite of the slight plot and lack of surprises. I can't say it was the most fun I've had with a Hammer film, but nice to see something different.

Back in the Hammer Horror trenches and #nowwatching Vampire Circus (1972). Following the killing of a child-murdering nobleman, a weird circus visits a quarantined village and children begin once again to vanish. I'm not terribly interested in vampires, but I'm a Hammer completist! #horrorsky

#justwatched Horror of Frankenstein (1970), another Hammer horror that goes back to basics with the good doctor. This has a bad reputation, but I enjoyed it for the most part. It falls apart when the monster shows up unfortunately, and he really lacks any menace or pathos. #horrorsky

Unsurprisingly conservative politics aside, this is as good as this type of thing gets! Constant action keeps the loose plot bouncing along, and we have a decent cast rounded out by Arthur Kennedy playing against type (ahem) as a gruff policeman.

God...Hammer could be seriously nasty when they wanted to, couldn't they? A very upsetting film - absolutely heartbreaking, in fact. A masterpiece of psychological horror, but not one I'll be rushing back to!

#nowwatching The Nanny (1965). It's been a while since I visited the world of Hammer horror - time for a classic! Bette Davis plays an English nanny put in charge of an emotionally disturbed young boy. But maybe things are not as they seem? #horrorsky

I remember less about every one of those resident evil films than the one before. This one passed through my brain without leaving any trace at all, like a gamma ray.

By this point these films had stopped trying to be scary, and had instead descended into self-parody. This one even has a meta reference to how Sundel Bolong only exist in those "Suzzanna movies"! The same fate suffered by Sadako, Freddy, Dracula, and Frankenstein...

Halloweenennius @nennius.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
A horror writer (played by Suzzanna) seeks inspiration in a country house where a woman (played by Suzzanna) died via erupting baby (the first Suzzanna). Now the house is haunted by a ghost Suzzanna. Also, there's a musical number accompanied by a blowjob joke. Typical Suzzanna fare, in other words.

#nowwatching Kliwon Friday Night (1986). It's taken me a while to get back into the Suzzanna box set from Severin, but I've been looking forward to this one! It began with a woman giving birth by means of the baby ripping open and emerging from her back, so strong start. #horrorsky

Not moving too far from comedy, as it happens. Lots of fun - shades of Evil Dead, Drag Me to Hell, and kung fu movies. Recommended for people who enjoyed the Ready or Not films, both for the mix of action/horror/comedy and the themes of class antagonism.

Decently directed, with a good central performance. Unfortunately it suffered from thin characterisation, and lost the plot a bit towards the end, throwing in a kind of reverse Last House on the Left scenario that didn't really go anywhere. The ending had shades of Eden Lake, but without the impact.
