#nowwatching Terror Train (1980). I'm in the mood for a slasher, and haven't seen this one for a long time! One of the quirkier and more interesting films from the slasher cycle, from what I recall. #horrorsky

#nowwatching Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965). The first of the excellent portmanteau films from Hammer's main rivals, Amicus. I adore these Amicus anthologies - just invested in blu ray copies of the whole set! #horrorsky

An interesting, experimental film from Hammer. The circus performers make the whole thing feel fantastical and otherworldly, and it kept my attention in spite of the slight plot and lack of surprises. I can't say it was the most fun I've had with a Hammer film, but nice to see something different.

Back in the Hammer Horror trenches and #nowwatching Vampire Circus (1972). Following the killing of a child-murdering nobleman, a weird circus visits a quarantined village and children begin once again to vanish. I'm not terribly interested in vampires, but I'm a Hammer completist! #horrorsky

#justwatched Horror of Frankenstein (1970), another Hammer horror that goes back to basics with the good doctor. This has a bad reputation, but I enjoyed it for the most part. It falls apart when the monster shows up unfortunately, and he really lacks any menace or pathos. #horrorsky

Unsurprisingly conservative politics aside, this is as good as this type of thing gets! Constant action keeps the loose plot bouncing along, and we have a decent cast rounded out by Arthur Kennedy playing against type (ahem) as a gruff policeman.

#nowwatching The Tough Ones (1976), an Umberto Lenzi-directed poliziottesco that I found by chance in a second hand store. Not sure what to expect, but Lenzi is generally reliable! #filmsky

God...Hammer could be seriously nasty when they wanted to, couldn't they? A very upsetting film - absolutely heartbreaking, in fact. A masterpiece of psychological horror, but not one I'll be rushing back to!

#nowwatching The Nanny (1965). It's been a while since I visited the world of Hammer horror - time for a classic! Bette Davis plays an English nanny put in charge of an emotionally disturbed young boy. But maybe things are not as they seem? #horrorsky

A horror writer (played by Suzzanna) seeks inspiration in a country house where a woman (played by Suzzanna) died via erupting baby (the first Suzzanna). Now the house is haunted by a ghost Suzzanna. Also, there's a musical number accompanied by a blowjob joke. Typical Suzzanna fare, in other words.

#nowwatching Kliwon Friday Night (1986). It's taken me a while to get back into the Suzzanna box set from Severin, but I've been looking forward to this one! It began with a woman giving birth by means of the baby ripping open and emerging from her back, so strong start. #horrorsky

Not moving too far from comedy, as it happens. Lots of fun - shades of Evil Dead, Drag Me to Hell, and kung fu movies. Recommended for people who enjoyed the Ready or Not films, both for the mix of action/horror/comedy and the themes of class antagonism.

The hardest part about being a horror fan is that whenever your genre is doing really well it's because the world is falling apart.

That was so good I'm going to watch another one. #nowwatching The Milky Way (1936), another Lloyd talkie. This time he's a milkman that gets roped into a boxing match. The film was eventually remade as The Calcium Kid with Orlando Bloom. #filmsky

#nowwatching Movie Crazy (1932). I'm a big fan of Harold Lloyd, and unlike Keaton most of his sound films hold up surprisingly well (and I actually really like several of Keaton's sound films!). This is one I haven't seen for a while - time for a revisit! #filmsky

Decently directed, with a good central performance. Unfortunately it suffered from thin characterisation, and lost the plot a bit towards the end, throwing in a kind of reverse Last House on the Left scenario that didn't really go anywhere. The ending had shades of Eden Lake, but without the impact.

Charmingly drab and delightfully humdrum. We get one story about a generic curse, one about a spooky hole, and one that's just a repurposed urban legend. Serling is given the thankless task of tying them together (and padding the last ten minutes) with some unconvincing pseudo-profound nonsense.

Very interesting. Far from Franco's traditional sleaze, this is more of a character study of a traumatised woman trying to navigate a patriarchal society. There are some parallels drawn with authoritarian rulers and domineering fathers. Anna Cohen is incredible. Unfortunately, it's slooooooooooooow!

#nowwatching Penda's Fen (1974). A rewatch for me. As a fervently conservative boy comes of age, he discovers his mixed nature. At the same time, he starts to come to terms with the changing landscape of England, and with the fact that change is what keeps it alive. Still relevant today. #horrorsky

Conclusions: 1) This is a folk horror movie. 2) It is truly, truly awful. 3) Shatner is utterly dreadful in it. 4) So is everybody else. 5) I love it.

Very very good. It covered the whole controversy in detail, with plenty of input from figures like James Ferman and archive footage from the likes of Mary Whitehouse. If you have any interest in the video nasties, this is essential viewing (moreso than many of the actual films...)
