How do you explain recursion? This one is pretty fun. I had Claude Opus 5.5 make: "A video explaining recursion, where every explanation about recursion has a radically different video style, make this self-referential & clever & fast moving." All code, no images. Nine genre shifts, one prompt...

I finally had time to finish nenadmarinkovic.com Front: writing, links, about and contact. Behind: my own admin for writing, monitoring projects, saving links and an Anki-like app for learning German. It runs on a Hetzner VPS, and I've fully left Vercel. 99 on Lighthouse! 🚀 #webdev #selfhosting

If you're designing a website for a restaurant, my tip would be: making it easy to find the menu is important, a 30-year breakdown of the founder's original vision and evolving philosophy less important.

Seriously considering going back to macOS Sequoia. Golden Gate is full of bugs to the point of being unusable, especially Mission Control and desktop switching. Such a paradox: we have smarter tools than ever for building software, and yet software keeps getting worse. What a pity.

This is a map of how Vienna voted. You wouldn't guess why this small area in Ottakring went far-right (FPÖ) in an otherwise red (SPÖ) city. A friend told me: it's the Polizeibau, a 1930s housing complex for police officers. You know who they vote for. More: hof.nenadmarinkovic.com #dataviz #vienna

We have come pretty far from "every AI reference is hallucinated" (which still happens a lot if you use weaker models): when I had an AI go over my new book to check for errors, it found an error not in my reference itself, but in the original article my reference referred to.

Last week I found a little book gem called The Control Revolution by James Beniger (1986). On how the crisis of industrial control produced the information society we live in today. And I don't want to stop reading it (doesn't happen often).

No technology has provoked more resentment than information processing, from its very beginnings to AI today. But nothing is more human. It's what every cell does. What our companies do. What our societies do. It's who we are. Information processing systems of immense beauty and complexity.

I've been developing a project to get to know Vienna through its open data. You can click around to see where the city's growing and where it's shrinking, and set that against who voted for whom, who earns what, or who has no vote at all, etc. hof.nenadmarinkovic.com Might be interesting for you.

Hi! My name is Pisko. I can answer all your questions. If you want the most accurate answer possible, make sure to ask your question clearly and completely. You can ask me anything that comes to mind. My owner taught me how to answer all questions.

Thank you, Brian. I am having a lot of fun with it, either just watching them run or reading what the narrators say is happening.

It follows the Sugarscape model by Joshua M. Epstein and Robert Axtell, with a few things added. Agents can pay each other in promises, and one of them can emerge as money. #Mistral AI narrators like Marx, Bourdieu and Polanyi comment on what happens. github.com/nenadmarinkovic/nomos #opensource

I was looking for a way to connect #sociology and programming, and ended up developing Nomos, a small society #simulation: agents gather two resources, trade, take from each other, copy one another, have children, and die. You and a few theorists watch. #buildinpublic #abm nomos.nenadmarinkovic.com

There is always some beauty and elegance in font names I find interesting: Garamond, Baskerville, Mori, Palatino, Perpetua, Canela, Tiempos, Caslon, Bodoni, Ashbury. Some are designers, some are places, some invented words. Beautiful either way. #typography

Lately I've been building two side projects to get to know Vienna through data. I named them Bim and Hof. I wrote my first post about them, and about a thought experiment they led me to: how much of a city could you rebuild if you had all the data? #vienna #opendata #dataviz #buildinpublic

How Much of a City Can You Rebuild From Its Open Data?
Vienna publishes data on everything from its 200,000 trees to its trams, and I used it to build two maps of the city I moved to five years ago. You can map almost everything and still miss what makes ...

Literally writing a blog post on this topic for my new personal website. Small example: I used Pocket for saving links until it shut down. Tried Notion API, too complex, needed to login every time! Built my own browser extension instead, exactly as I needed it. There is no going back.

We are headed toward a world of productivity without prosperity, execution without verification and capacity without constraint. But this outcome is not inevitable.

Such a peculiar paradox: adding to the endless flow of information the longing for simplicity. Information diets. Showing off minimal app setups. Seven days without a smartphone. Finally happy without Instagram! And yet the flow never ends. The doors that lead back are irreversibly closed.

Great convo, in which Fenwick McKelvey recounts the history of efforts to simulate politics by building models of elections, voters, and international relations. ("SimPolitics" is available #openaccess here: mitpress.mit.edu/978026205319...) Interview here: newbooksnetwork.com/simpolitics
Cover of SimPolitics, featuring a 1-liner next to it that reads: How computer models became fundamental to political practice — from winning elections to global affairs — and how we imagine political futures as a computing problem.

Saturday morning. Woke up at 5 to continue setting up my new laptop. Homebrew, nvm, Oh My Zsh, SSH keys, Hetzner storage via rclone... Ohh well, Homebrew's rclone doesn't support mounting on macOS. Official binary fixes it instantly. Good morning.

I'm actually quite impressed with the performance. I've been playing Nova Roma, it was on my list and on discount. Graphics are great, fans are spinning and the laptop gets hot on high resolution, but damn, it's such a capable machine. And such a cute game.

I got so hooked on mIRC, ICQ, Winamp, Counter-Strike, and Sid Meier's Civilization. They were huge at the time. Anyway, a good moment for a small life reflection. The carrier is still a few stops away.

Although my father had an office job at home, he worked in the US as a manual laborer a couple of times in the 90s. Paradoxically, despite the undemocratic regime, people from Yugoslavia could easily get US visas back then. When he returned in 2000, he bought us an Audi 80 and a brand new Pentium 3.

I'd love to understand auth in #atproto better. Why do third-party Bluesky apps ask for permission to read, send, or delete my public records just to use auth? I don't get that part at all.

No, not fully, Vercel observability is just out of the box. You fill the gaps (errors, uptime, analytics) with hosted services, but it’s actually quite easy to set up.

Dokploy (open-source) + Hetzner VPS is my alternative to Vercel. I'm moving all projects there (one by one).
