How do you explain recursion? This one is pretty fun. I had Claude Opus 5.5 make: "A video explaining recursion, where every explanation about recursion has a radically different video style, make this self-referential & clever & fast moving." All code, no images. Nine genre shifts, one prompt...

I finally had time to finish nenadmarinkovic.com Front: writing, links, about and contact. Behind: my own admin for writing, monitoring projects, saving links and an Anki-like app for learning German. It runs on a Hetzner VPS, and I've fully left Vercel. 99 on Lighthouse! 🚀 #webdev #selfhosting

If you're designing a website for a restaurant, my tip would be: making it easy to find the menu is important, a 30-year breakdown of the founder's original vision and evolving philosophy less important.

Seriously considering going back to macOS Sequoia. Golden Gate is full of bugs to the point of being unusable, especially Mission Control and desktop switching. Such a paradox: we have smarter tools than ever for building software, and yet software keeps getting worse. What a pity.

This is a map of how Vienna voted. You wouldn't guess why this small area in Ottakring went far-right (FPÖ) in an otherwise red (SPÖ) city. A friend told me: it's the Polizeibau, a 1930s housing complex for police officers. You know who they vote for. More: hof.nenadmarinkovic.com #dataviz #vienna

We have come pretty far from "every AI reference is hallucinated" (which still happens a lot if you use weaker models): when I had an AI go over my new book to check for errors, it found an error not in my reference itself, but in the original article my reference referred to.

No technology has provoked more resentment than information processing, from its very beginnings to AI today. But nothing is more human. It's what every cell does. What our companies do. What our societies do. It's who we are. Information processing systems of immense beauty and complexity.

I was looking for a way to connect #sociology and programming, and ended up developing Nomos, a small society #simulation: agents gather two resources, trade, take from each other, copy one another, have children, and die. You and a few theorists watch. #buildinpublic #abm nomos.nenadmarinkovic.com

There is always some beauty and elegance in font names I find interesting: Garamond, Baskerville, Mori, Palatino, Perpetua, Canela, Tiempos, Caslon, Bodoni, Ashbury. Some are designers, some are places, some invented words. Beautiful either way. #typography

Every time I'm in public transport, I open my app to check if my position syncs with the tram or bus I'm on. Living simultaneously in the real city and a small simulation I built. bim.nenadmarinkovic.com #vienna #buildinpublic #dataviz

Lately I've been building two side projects to get to know Vienna through data. I named them Bim and Hof. I wrote my first post about them, and about a thought experiment they led me to: how much of a city could you rebuild if you had all the data? #vienna #opendata #dataviz #buildinpublic

How Much of a City Can You Rebuild From Its Open Data?
Vienna publishes data on everything from its 200,000 trees to its trams, and I used it to build two maps of the city I moved to five years ago. You can map almost everything and still miss what makes ...

We’re rolling out improvements to trending topics right now! If you don’t already have it, you will in the next day or so. The new system catches more topics, identifies more posts within that topic, and serves them up faster, so you can feel more in tune with what everyone's talking about.

Our democracies, economies, and legal systems weren’t built to absorb AI at the rate it’s advancing. In a new essay for @noemamag.com, our Reverse Alignment coalition map out the investments needed for society to flourish with AI: www.noemamag.com/what-humanit...

What Humanity Needs To Flourish In The Next Decade | NOEMA
We are headed toward a world of productivity without prosperity, execution without verification and capacity without constraint. But this outcome is not inevitable.

Such a peculiar paradox: adding to the endless flow of information the longing for simplicity. Information diets. Showing off minimal app setups. Seven days without a smartphone. Finally happy without Instagram! And yet the flow never ends. The doors that lead back are irreversibly closed.

On the train from Vienna to Grünau im Almtal. Five days ahead, half work, half fun, while the toddler plays with grandparents. I guess it would be a shame not to share some Alps photos.

Great convo, in which Fenwick McKelvey recounts the history of efforts to simulate politics by building models of elections, voters, and international relations. ("SimPolitics" is available #openaccess here: mitpress.mit.edu/978026205319...) Interview here: newbooksnetwork.com/simpolitics
Cover of SimPolitics, featuring a 1-liner next to it that reads: How computer models became fundamental to political practice — from winning elections to global affairs — and how we imagine political futures as a computing problem.

In the bottom lect, the New Books Network logo; in the bottom right "MIT Press, 2026"

Saturday morning. Woke up at 5 to continue setting up my new laptop. Homebrew, nvm, Oh My Zsh, SSH keys, Hetzner storage via rclone... Ohh well, Homebrew's rclone doesn't support mounting on macOS. Official binary fixes it instantly. Good morning.

It's Friday night, the baby girl is sleeping, and I'm installing #Steam just to see how the M5 Pro chip performs. Just for benchmarking reasons. @steampowered.com

My new MacBook Pro M5 is a few stops away and I feel like a boy getting his first machine. Good moment to share how I got my first computer.

If it weren't for a newsletter from Vienna Business Agency I almost ignored, I'd have no idea Nir Eyal is coming to Vienna on July 30. I like listening to this guy. #Vienna #NirEyal #startups viennabusinessagency.at/events-works...

I've been using Resend for emails and it works great, but looking for alternatives. Anyone using Brevo? How's the deliverability, developer experience? #email #webdev #buildinpublic

I finally regained access to my old Soundcloud account soundcloud.com/nenadmarinko.... If you're up for some mostly electronic music, there's a decade of listening history there. I use Spotify more these days, but Soundcloud is still great for discovering great music.

Strange to live in three languages daily. German and Serbian at home, English for work and media. My toddler already mixes them in quite a funny way. Step outside and hear five more languages in the first five minutes. I guess she's handling it better than I am. #Vienna

When is the best time to start building in public? When you create the repo? When you have a working beta? Genuinely asking.

I get the convenience of Vercel for Next.js projects, but Hetzner with Dokploy installed on your VPS gives you the same experience: deployments, previews, custom domains, SSL, env variables. For a fraction of the price. Plus, you own the infrastructure.

Many of us fell in love with the web as a platform before becoming web developers. I think the same is true for #atproto. The more I read about it, the more I like it.

I keep being surprised by how many things Vienna gets right as a city. So many small, incremental decisions have added up to a system that’s genuinely amazing to live in.

I'm glad to see that data ownership is something more people care about (especially in the EU). #atproto and Mastodon are moving this in different ways. It seems the hard part is telling the story in a way non-technical people can actually get.

It seems like 80% of the few people I follow here aren’t active. I want it to be 80% people shipping interesting design and code instead. Devs, designers, illustrators, UI/UX, #atproto people — drop a reply or like, and I’ll follow.

Happy to see so many in tech and academia on Bluesky following events in Serbia. The fight is still going — for democracy, dignity, and the rule of law. I left for Vienna 5 years ago, but I'm proud to have marched with hundreds of thousands in Belgrade on March 15th. Hope to see Serbia free one day.

So much is happening in the tech that it's easy to miss the big things. For example: TypeScript 7.0 beta has been released, and it's a complete rewrite in Go — not just a minor update. It has the same type-checking as before, but is about 10 times faster than version 6.0.
