Three thousand years ago, a Greek potter looked at a bowl and thought: ‘You know what this needs? A leg!’ Clay bowl with leg-shaped handle!🦵😆 Early Geometric period 850 BC. Altes Museum, Berlin 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows an ancient Greek pottery bowl with a rounded, deep body, wide open mouth and flared rim. It has a large handle shaped like a human leg, extending from the left side of the bowl in my photo, bending at a right angle and ending in a flat foot. The bowl has a camel-coloured surface decorated with dark brown geometric patterns, which include zigzags and meander motifs arranged in horizontal bands around the body of the bowl and along the leg. From Attica, Early Geometric period, circa 850 BC. It sits on a light stone coloured surface in a display case at the Altes Museum in Berlin.

Some 3,400 years ago, an Egyptian artisan captured a sense of speed and elegance in this beautifully carved handle in the shape of a horse! 🐴 ❤️ New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, reign of Amenhotep III, c. 1390–1352 BC. The Met 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows an ivory handle of a light whip or fly whisk carved in the shape of a horse. The ivory body of the horse is stained reddish-brown, and the mane and tail are black. The horse is seen in profile facing left. Its legs are outstretched in front and at the back in what scholars refer to as a ‘flying gallop' position, with a gracefully arched back. The eyes are inlaid with garnet, one of which is missing (not seen in my photo). It is displayed on a vertical, thin metal stand in a museum display case. This beautiful object is dated to the New Kingdom period, Dynasty 18, reign of Amenhotep IlI, c. 1390-1352 BC. Dimensions: L: 14.7 cm × H: 5.5 cm × W: 2 cm

The tenth sheet from the set Joshoku kaiko tewaza kusa (Silkworm Culture: The Handiwork of Women), by Kitagawa Utamaro, c. 1798-1800, Japan.
In this dynamic woodblock print, four women collaborate in the exacting task of stretching and drying raw silk floss and reeled thread after processing. At the upper left, a woman reaches upward with bare arms to loop long, lustrous skeins of white silk over a elevated horizontal pole suspended above a deep wooden tub. In the foreground, two women lean into opposite directions, using synchronized physical tension to stretch a supple pad of wet silk floss (mawata) across wooden posts with paddles and tender hands. Nearby, another helper with a white cloth (tenugui) bound around her hair looks on attentively. The composition evokes a rich sensory atmosphere: the earthy, warm aroma of damp silk fibers and steamy wash water, the quiet rustle of patterned cotton kimonos, the gentle creak of wooden paddles against posts, the soft splash of water within cedar tubs, and the rhythmic, silent intimacy of women working in harmony.

Designed around 1798–1800 by the master printmaker Kitagawa Utamaro (1753–1806), this artwork represents sheet ten, titled "Stretching the Silk Floss" (Mawata-kaki), from his celebrated twelve-sheet polyptych series Jōshoku kaiko tewaza-kusa (Silkworm Culture: The Handiwork of Women). While instructional manuals detailing sericulture (kaiko-kō) were widespread in Edo-period Japan, Utamaro revolutionized the genre by populating the rural, labor-intensive process with idealized, fashionable beauties (bijinga). By portraying high-fashion Edo women performing arduous agricultural and textile tasks—such as picking mulberry leaves, boiling cocoons, reeling thread, and weaving—Utamaro celebrated the spirit of monozukuri (artisanal dedication, technical precision, and deep respect for raw materials) while transforming technical documentation into an icon of urban sophistication.

Upping the challenge is the fact that I wanted to reread at least one Emile Zola novel set in Paris before my visit there later this year! The Kill or Ladies' Paradise? Although I liked L'Assomoir, Nana, The Belly of Paris and The Masterpiece too. It logically should be The Kill......

90 years ago, the Jarrow Crusaders marched nearly 300 miles to London in protest at unemployment and poverty. Thomas Cantrell Dugdale’s 1936 painting captures their arrival from a Piccadilly interior (possibly the Ritz).

I finally watched Backrooms last night. It's more confusing and less scary than I expected. I was more taken with the concept of "lost" spaces forgotten behind wall during the construction of a building. Mum told me where ours are, in our own house, as her and Dad were involved in the design.
