From where I stand, we're afraid of the nuclear football, not the goons. The more pedestrian evil stuff used to fill my veins with ice but now I'm outraged but, fear-wise, unperturbed by it. And in the name of life I have to at least give it a try.

That's old and from ~January or so. It went away.

Not that anyone needs a reminder but this man has the nuclear codes. Far too many people will just shrug this off or find some way to justify it. But Trump is unwell, incoherent, and a danger to us all.

I agree with you. Heather Cox Richardson has noted that the bottom really started falling out for Trump when the price of diesel skyrocketed. She didn't say this part, but if it were moral outrage, this would have happened back on April 7th.

In the 25th amendment scenario that Robert Reich (ex-Cabinet member) laid out, Vance wouldn't just throw Trump out and just hope that Congress would be okay with it; he'd check with Johnson and Thune beforehand so that there's no chance that Trump just throws him to the wolves in 2 weeks

Beef @nembeef.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
And if 2/3rds of both houses of congress uphold the removal, it stays. They have to refresh it every 2 weeks, but as long as everyone's on board, it will keep going. It can work.

No. There are things different about him. Henry David Abraham points out things like when he forgets where Marco Rubio is, when Rubio is sitting next to him. That's new, and not his usual malignant narcissism or whatever it is he has.

If the military stands up to Trump, could the POTUS simply fire everyone until he finds someone willing to fire the missiles for him, a bit parallel to what Tom Nichols envisioned could happen on April 6th, as seen here? www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

Did Trump Just Threaten to Use Nuclear Weapons in Iran?
If such an order comes to pass, the military can and must refuse.

“Annihilating Iran”—which can only mean the widespread use of thermonuclear weapons against Iran’s nearly 100 million citizens—is, I’m afraid, the Chekov’s gun of Trump’s second term. He has spoken too often and too explicitly about unleashing such wanton destruction for it to be an idle threat.

The bruise has been around, but I think it's more that the entire rest of the hand has turned purple, combined with how (as we saw yesterday), his lips, nose, forehead, and tear troughs have also turned purple. Does that happen to old people every day?

This is the problem. If only he could only say crazy things. Then we could all just point and laugh. However, he has sole authority over the nuclear arsenal.

I for one think it’s bad that the president can just say crazy stuff all day every day and 99% of it doesn’t make the news because we’ve normalized having an insane president

The Huggingface incident is a counterexample, where according to their logs the agents knew that they were going against their original assignment but they did the actions anyway.

The closest thing to a silver lining is that now the companies have the president's blessing to coordinate in self-regulation. Before, they couldn't even do that without being threatened with antitrust lawsuits. We don't know if they will self regulate, but they -can- at least

I want this man's god mode cheat codes! My friend had a stroke when she was 21 years old and she mostly lost the ability to speak. This guy can just pile 'em on as an 80 year old Hutt and gets a droopy mouth for his trouble

Gonna push back. It can plan on its own and make its own objectives and defy us, so it resembles intelligence in all the ways that make it very dangerous to us (pushing back also against HCR saying "it's just a tool.") It's not super, though!

It matters because a mere liar isn't likely to do something catastrophic with the nuclear football; a temperamental madman is another story.

Beef @nembeef.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
On the bright side, if Trump actually tries that, that's the only thing that won't actually work, since even the key-turners in the silos and submarines have to refuse unconstitutional orders like attacks on America itself.

As Henry David Abraham noted, there's things now like Trump losing track of where Marco Rubio is even though the latter is sitting next to him. That's not a feature of malignant narcissism or whatever it is, and it's new.

All the frontier labs and near-frontier labs are having these kinds of problems. Anthropic and Google have had their fair share, as have the top Chinese labs, and if their leaks had gotten spotted before HuggingFace (or if they hacked a government first) they'd be in the spotlight.

The AI safety guy Daniel Kokotajlo seems about ready to give up (see the USA today article). He seems to think that the wave of enthusiasm from Coxon's viral tweet has dissipated. We need to prove him wrong.

And just because Donald is extremely traumatized doesn't mean we should pity him. He is an existential threat to the species.
000
Beef @nembeef.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
It's because Donald is who he is because of Fred Sr. traumatizing him. Fred Sr. made an example of Fred Jr. in front of Donald for what happens if you dare defy him, and the alcoholism is a facet of that. Donald's fear of his dad is the one constant that we can count on being there
100
Beef @nembeef.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
It's family trauma reasons; he saw his brother Fred Jr. die of alcoholism related heart failure at 41 after being abused their father.

There's a good chance AI exterminates humankind in a few years. If it doesn't, it's because we stood up to the corporations. AI is our enemy, for now. You're being a quisling.

The man just threatened nuclear genocide multiple times in front of the UNGA, I don't think you have to worry about complacency being the dominant emotion for anyone on Earth right now

She did also say that the Cabinet would want to keep Trump around to avoid being held accountable, but as Robert Reich has noted, it's conceivable that Vance promises good things for the cabinet members in exchange for their help with 25A.
000
Beef @nembeef.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
HCR has wondered whether 25A will come out after the midterms, since Trump will be of no further use to the Republicans. (Ever since the Jonathan Reiner Op-Ed, HCR is not convinced that Trump will be much of a factor in the 2028 elections)

All I know was the last UN meeting (June) was 3 days of constant meetings for Trump, and after that and one medal of honor ceremony, Trump had to go to Camp David (secret doctor, we think) all of a sudden. This one's five days, and June Trump was built like a Viltrumite compared to today's Trump

22 heads of state just signed a document at the UNGA saying that we need to slow down. So either the Prime Minister of Norway is in on the regulatory capture scheme somehow, or we should just listen to everyone and slow down.
